Microsoft always phuck up. They phucked up with games for windows back in the day when they tried to rival steam etc. Just little to no support and then pull the plug.

The 360 shet all over the ps3. Why? It came out 1.5 years earlier or something with gta iv exclusive dlc announced, halo 3, saints row, gears of war etc. Party chat too which the ps3 didn't have for ages., trigger buttons so it made it the #1 console for fpsers. (That ps3 controller was unplayable)

Then they drop the ball with bungie and stopped the decent exclusives.

The company is, very obviously, invested in video games as a business, as an industry, and as a market – you don’t try to spend $70 billion on a video game publisher acquisition if you weren’t committed – but the issue is that Microsoft does not yet seem to have any vision or understanding for what it wants to stand for as far as video games go. This is something that has become more and more evident over the last few years, and has been thrown into stark relief over the last few months, with the dirty laundry being aired out thanks to the Activision acquisition attempt, as well as the release (to a critical mauling) of Redfall.

The bolded is being way too generous because it's been a hell of a lot longer than "the last few years."

The original Xbox came out in 2001, the 360 in 2005, and although it absolutely smashed it out of the park for the first several years, it was already treading water before the Xbone released in 2013. Frankly, I just want to know who these poor, dumb bastards are who were still sticking with Xbox after that schit-show of a launch and beyond. It was only with the Xbox Series (still a stupid name) that they at least went through the motions of showing off a bunch of TBD projects, and even now most of them are still yet to be determined if they'll release before the freezing of hell.

In any case, a key takeaway from the article would be "vision" in the artistic, creative sense, which I'll touch on later. Instead, the "vision" Microsoft does have one in the form of a digital video game Netflix service/eCoSyStEm, which is in line with the rest of the company's strategy across their various divisions.

The trouble comes when you ask why those other divisions are so successful, and the blunt answer is market capture, which helps give additional perspective to consider regarding Phil Spencer's defeated remarks on people having built up their libraries elsewhere. The obvious answer to most of us is that Microsoft needed to prioritize making games over trying to be a glorified streaming sports/motion control yoga box (Xbone), and that is still true to this day, however the company now seems hellbent on not putting in the work to get there after twiddling their thumbs.

Sony and Nintendo didn't get where they are and earn consumers' trust overnight, and both had their own moments of failure; the PS3 was too expensive at launch and was a tortoise out of the gates when it came to games, while the Wii-U was a disaster. Except Sony reacted to the problem by investing in new IPs, and Nintendo's executives took pay cuts until they could come up with a winning formula through the Switch. Microsoft... sat on their Dorito dust-covered thumbs with growing collection of IPs sitting in the corner, and if it weren't for Phil Spencer and his idea of Game Pass, Xbox would have nothing but Craig and Redfall. Hell, they could've just left Redfall as a multiplatform release and people might have forgotten about it, while looking at least a bit better to regulators for not being so desperate as to cling onto that scheisse as an exclusive.

Unlike Sony and Nintendo, Xbox is just a small part of Microsoft as a whole, which likely complicates the entire picture far more because there are expectations for "Xbox" to eventually grow and capture another segment of the market for Microsoft. The refusal to expand and develop fresh new IPs was an early sign that the Xbox brand was becoming increasingly detached from the artistic and creative nature of the medium. Now we have the fact that it finally dawning on Xbox's upper management that they lack consistent, quality games was less of a wake up call and instead more resignation at being caught with their pants down for so long.

Marketing rights to big third party games, and they won the PS4 generation after the flop of the Xbox one, so casuals just upgrade their PS4 to 5 much like their yearly iphone plans, because of all their digital purchases on the PS4, they aren't going to start again elsewhere.

Marketing seems to be really effective when you got highly praised and liked exclusive AAA titles, and not only that but PS5 keeps having the better looking and performing version of most 3rd party games as well.
