British and Australian people would say we are the ones with American accents because we talk different than them. You are referring to dialects. A dialect is a difference in speech within the same country. An accent is somebody from a different country. Somebody from Argentina who is fluent in English would have an argentinian accent.

West coast english has been the standard for the past 100 years or so since that's how actors and actresses talk. Every other region used to have their own dialect, but I guess social media is homogenizing everything.
It was very strange to meet my little cousins who have lived in scandi Minnesota communities all their lives, but sound nothing like their parents or our grandparents. Accent is 98% gone.
