Red face I didn't winterize my bike...what will happen when I try to start it? (Serious)

I own a Ninja250 and when December rolled along, I just took the battery out, charged it, and it has since been sitting in my closet. The bike is in my basement under a cover, and still has gas in the tank.

I didn't know I had to do anything to do to prepare it for storage and apparently I've been told that I should have drained the gas tank and cleaned out the engine???? WTF???

For those of you who own sportbikes, can you please help me out? Did I damage my bike? It only has 500 miles on it and it's brand new from 2006.

Can I simply just put my battery back in and start it up and ride off? I thought it would be that simple but I'm afraid I just dug myself into a hole...

    Please help!

I've heard not to do that- only to start the bike if you are gonna ride it. Idling the engine by starting it up periodically is supposedly harmful to the bike.

But is this what you do with your bike? Cuz if you own one and do this, I'll take your advice...

I really can't see how letting the bike idle for a bit could damage the engine. I mean, I'm not a motorcycle expert, but the engine is made to run right lol. What's the difference if you are stuck in traffic idling or chilling in your driveway?

your carbs can get "gummed up" if you leave gas in them too long......the least you should do is drain them.....you will see a drain screw or nut on the bottom of each carb......

and if you have a gas furnace in your basement it isnt such a wise idea to keep the bike full of gasoline down there........KA-BOOM !!!!!!!

    Haha, I lol'ed...reps on recharge...

On the actual question...It's not as bad as if the bike was in storage outside in the cold...now it could be a problem starting it when spring would come but I don't think it's a big deal since it's in your basement...

Yeah - 3 months isn't really long enough to do any harm. The only thing I'd worry about is if you left the tank very low on gas - there could be some condensation, especially if it gets really cold in your garage or the temperature changes a lot. Still won't cause a big problem, but you should run through that first tank of gas as quickly as possible - or just drain it and refill it.

go to an auto store or whatever and buy a can of "carb cleaner"......get the kind you pour into your gas tank.....NOT FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER.......the first day you start your bike up go to the gas station.....pour the cleaner in your tank and fill it all the way up......and run that tank till its almost dry......that will clean your carbs of any winter residue

I'm guessing the bike is fine. I used to winterize my lawn mower, then one winter just stopped. It started fine the next spring. It's only for a few months so I wouldn't worry about it.

You might want to roll the bike around a bit to stop from getting flat spots on your tires, but then again, I don't how long it takes for that to happen.

You're right about not starting it during the winter, that is, unless you get it up to operating temperature.

If you just start the bike for a minute or so, you'll condense a lot of water in the exhaust and oil (when you burn gas you get CO2 and water). Do that again and and again and you'll rust out your exhaust pretty quickly.

    Thumbs up

Gasoline these days is cleaner these days. if it's only been sitting for like three months, it'll be fine. i'd put a little bit of stabilizer in it, then let itsit for a few minutes, then start it up and let it run for another 5-10. it's a new bike, i'm assuming the oil is pretty clean, it'll be fine.

if you were taking this bike to race supercross, i'd rebuild the engine, give it all new fluids, and a bunch of other gay stuff.

    the bikes fine

I've got a sportbike (have had a few), but unfortunately for you I live in Florida, so I don't have to winterize.

In all honesty, go to www.sportbikes.net and register as a member to ask this question or just search to see if someone has already asked that same question (probable).

    They give very good responses.
