Supplementing amino acids in the form of BCAAs (Branched Chain Amino Acids) is one of the best way to preserve lean muscle mass and to increase your overall muscle.

Whey protein usually has a pretty decent BCAA profile, and contains plenty of amino acids.

The use of high dose aminos can really give tremendous results. As for single aminos to take, high dose Glutamine, Arginine, Taurine and the BCAA's work very well. Another thing you can try are things like Nitromine or Vendetta. Both are EAA formulas and are great before, during and or post workout. A sample idea on using all of these would look something like this.

Pre workout: EAA formula with added Taurine, Glutamine and Arginine

During workout: BCAA formula with added Glutamine, Taurine and Arginine.

Post workout: 50-70 grams of whey protein.

There are other protocols for using aminos but this just provides a basic blueprint for trying them out.
