you can also check out the Calguns.net forum. It’s a little bit more antiquated but they can point you in the right direction too.

If they're legal in ur state, u can just buy them online.

You will need to ship to to an authorized FFL (Gun store/pawn shop/etc) They will charge u $20-$50 for this service.

U go to FFL place, they process background check, Make u wait the waiting period (unless you have CCW license, waiting period is waved) Then u go home with gun.


Aero precision is a solid mid/high tier brand. Id use that as a starting point. BCM, Daniel Defense, etc if ur looking for more high end swag. PSA, Anderson, etc if ur looking more poverty tier.

My best advice is to walk into a local gun store(small buisness, not Cabela's or Sportsmans) in your area and ask them. They know the laws and AR's and will help you figure it out

You can spend 500 on one or you can be a snob like me and spend 3k on one.

Word of advice, if you buy a cheap one, do yourself a favor and at least buy a decent aftermarket barrel for it from a company like criterion, faxon or LaRue.

The barrel and bolt carrier group are the two most important parts of an AR. don't cheap out on them.

Recommend you build since retailers will obviously sell cucked versions of guns to you with features you might not like

For example you might want to choose your own stock, muzzle device, etc., to meet compliance, whether it be fixed mag, featureless, etc..

One option you might consider is a maglock that can easily be removed and installed such as the FNGR MAGLATCH, which is useful if you wanted to convert from CA compliant to regular, for example if you err, walked a couple feet across the border to Arizona and back. Just remember that you must promise not to use magazines greater than 10 rounds or it becomes an "assault weapon" and snitches don't get stitches but rewards.

OP lets start with your budget first. A good, prebuilt AR runs anywhere from $900 - $1800

You can never go wrong with a Colt, its reasonably priced but it has that old school front sight gas block and you might not want.

I edited my post. If you want to walk into a gun store and buy a gun, solid choice. Just make sure you arent buying some low quality junk. You can handle them and get a feel for them in there. Hit up a small local gun shop, they are well versed in the law.

Look out for Colt, Daniel Defense. This gun is the same one I posted above, will never let you down srs. Its a little pricey, but one of the best manufacturers today. The thing with buying a lower priced one like the Colt is its got a classic M4 look to it with the front sight post and the 2 piece plastic handguard. Many people buy these and spend extra money upgrading them later on, then they need a vice, special tools, etc. I recommend just buying what you like right off the bat

Lower kit just get from aero and get the one without a trigger since your replacing it with a larue

Iron sights are up to you too, I prefer metal ones and a trident sight so I went with griffins

I picked up a Sig m400 Tread before chit got crazy. It’s not a DD or overly fancy but isn’t exactly bargain bin either. I threw an SLR handguard, basic red dot and pop up sights on it (still in it for around a grand/1200 though)
Rugers AR556 MPR is similar but with a nicer trigger.
Those would keep you closer to your price point.
