How / Why are these military style weapons available to civilians?

I don' really know anything about guns, but read this AR 15 is a semi automatic. Is that a machine gun? Just looking at the gun, it looks like something military would use and seems to be the weapon of choice for mass shooters.

Hate to break it to you OP, but all those mouth breathers already have guns, and to date, haven't killed you. You're afraid for no reason.

Also remember those mouth breathers, texting and driving while you're going 80mph on a 2 lane highway. You trust them enough there. At the end of the day, a majority of people aren't out to kill you. However, without the means to defend ourselves at all, home invasions will go up, criminals will still kill each other with guns, and mass casualty events will still happen.

Here's what it really boils down to.

Guns take up a low of space. Bullets fly a long fukkin way, and there starts to be problems if they run into people.

If you live in a low-density area, guns have more utility out in open space, and they also serve as a legitimate sport or hobby.

If you live in a high-density area, guns have less utility and start to be seen as a potential problem.

America is densifying around about 2 dozen cities. The number of Americans that see guns as a potential problem is only going up.

I'm hardcore right wing and pro 2A, but I can see the writing on the wall here. Guns are going to be Euro-style banned within my lifetime, once we get a critical mass of urban voters to overcome small-state Republicans.

In Israel, military service is also mandatory for almost two years so people learn how to use guns and respect them. So I'd feel a lot safer with a teacher there having access to a gun rather than Susie Jenkins who bought one at WalMart and might have shot off a few dozen rounds at a range.

Personally I'm good with this one on 3 counts:

- general gun safety/knowledge

- public safety [more aware/trained people in daily life]

- civic cohesion [shared experience might help heal some of our divisions]

Not seen so far ITT- age restriction. Most people age out of violent crime. The brain matures and the hormones calm down. Perhaps a two tier system?

- military service/completed military or law enforcement training

- age 25 [should be mostly grown up and clear of college/drinking/party culture]
