I have always done lunges but never walking lunges, I started doing these now and fck they are difficult as fck. Its not the weight but the balance that is throwing me off and making the weight feel heavier than what it is, like lifting 100lbs in a bucket of water VS just lifting a 100lbs rock.
I started with 30lbs dumbbells up to 60lbs, but still very wobbly, hoping to get to 100lbs dumbbells which is what I do with just regular lunges.

They're my go-to quad dominant movement when I take a break from squats. Barbell or kettlebell work great. Yes they're a b*tch.
Can get some extra core & erector stimulation by holding *light* DBs over your head.Once upon a time (maxes 2020) ...

I do static and walking lunges regularly. Bodyweight, sandbag, rucksack, whatever I have available. A horrible workout is to put on a weight vest or rucksack and do 400m of walking lunges, I have done that before and my legs hated me a lot. I learned that day it takes 438 lunges for me to cover 400m.
A workout I have coming up will just be bodyweight with this one - 400m of lunges, but after lunging with each leg, knock out a two pump burpee. If I'm hitting the same numbers, I'll end up doing 438 lunges, 219 burpees, and 438 push-ups. Just waiting for a day when I don't have a lot of walking planned the next day...
Step-ups are badass too, if you haven't done a lot with them.

I find Bulgarian splits squats easier from a balance perspective as my back leg is balanced on a platform and I am just going up and down.
I think with a barbell it would be easier, however due to my shoulder surgery I don't have the flexibility to hold a barbell on my back comfortable enough and it would take away my focus. I feel you on the knee man..
I have no idea what is a rucksack
I've done steps ups they are definitely difficult. Ironically I find it harder coming down then going up.On the list for Bannukah

I've never liked the walking or even just forward lunges because of this. Too much forward movement of the weight. What I found was a great alternative was reverse stationary lunges. Instead of starting by moving my right foot forward, I move my left leg backward and I end up in the same position but w/the weight moving straight down as soon as my back foot leaves the ground and then right back up. Give it a try. You can alternate legs to mimic the waking lunge more or do all reps on one leg then the other. I stopped doing barbell squat and subbed them for barbell lunges for a while and even tried holding the barbell in the front rack position and it felt relatively stable.
