1. Hard
2. Useful for society

Yes, he is ultimately the one responsible for picking a different job if he wants more money but math should be compensated more highly so I don't see the issue with him calling attention to it.

Again, it's not like he's teaching sociology. But because has the beard and looks like a redditor, miscers want to fit him into their whiny liberal worldview when that's not the case.

1. He is an associate professor, not a full or tenured professor.
2. He teaches at a tiny (less than 2000 students) liberal arts college in Utah.

5 years from now when he's a full professor and/or if he gets off his lazy ass and works goes to work at one of the major universities in the area he will be making double that.

Point is hes in an entry level roll probably only teaching 1 class (3 1 hour sessions) a week making nearly what the MAX pay for the TOP position at a Panda express even though he is generating far less revenue for his employer. on top of this his career offers far more upside in the long run, so basically he has nothing to complain about except that he doesn't like it when the proletariat can live decent lives.

If he possesses skills, knowledge etc. that the market deems useful then he is free to seek market return for those characteristics. A degree in isolation means nothing, it's what you do with it that counts (financially). A PhD in math could be teaching a grad student seminar for effectively minimum wage OR pulling down millions as a quant trader. The choice (and associated effort etc) is up to the individual.
