It's hard to say, objectively, considering every sport is different and requires different skills/talents. You could easily do a "top 5 runners of all time" easy, but "athletes" can mean a lot of things. It's a bit subjective/interest based. For example, I appreciate NHL more than any other major team sport, so Gretzky is #1 for me. Likewise, I'm really into skateboarding so why can't Rodney Mullen be in the conversation? The man invented so many tricks including the kickflip and was years ahead of his time.

Roger Federer
Usain Bolt
