why didn't they give him a lethal injection to spare him from the suffering?

From what was described, he went in face first upside down, didn't have room to turn and manuever his way out so he went for a nearby fissure he thought had open space where he could turn his body. turns out that fissure was even more narrow and only a few inches of his legs were visible inside the hole. Trying to get out I think he slipped deeper into the hole. Whatever the situation was, he couldn't pull himself out and the rescue team there had a hell of a time trying to get where the guy was and using tools to try and widen the hole.

I went spelunking one time in college about 20 of us. Never again and it freaks me out to this day I did it. There was one spot you had to go feet first through a small hole. then a 3'x3' "room" you had to roll yourself head first to go out the other side small hole. Craziness. Fuk that. At the end it was pretty cool though. There was a big room that you could climb up and slide down a wet muddy hillside......way down in the earth.

I use to do fuel cell repairs on C130's......crawling through the wings to fix leaks. I hated it. It's spacious compared to what this guy did. I don't understand why anyone would electively do that. I am not saying he deserves death, but he put himself there. People trying to save him are also risking their lives to save a guy that put himself there. I've done SAR on stuff like that. People that knowingly put themselves at risk and the other people having to put themselves at risk to save them.

The experience, adventure, exploration, geologist, challenge, etc?
I'm a rock climber and a lot of people don't understand why I do it, there's nothing more enjoyable/relaxing/peaceful to me than being out in nature on the side of a cliff. It's my version of meditation and exercise. I've dabbled in a bit of caving too and it was neat to do.

He was to go in the birth canal but took a wrong direction and ended sliding head first in that other route. Going that way wasn't the plan. When they tried pulling him out with a pulley system, one of the pulleys broke and the rock that was holding it crumbled too. It was clay underneath so they had no way to reattach it.
This seemed like a fun death too:
