I want to get into reading, not sure where to start though. I like horror and mystery/crime/thriller.
I'm thinking of getting the Witcher books to start.

Dean Koontz- favorite books: Watchers, Lightning, Strangers
Harlan Coben- The Innocent. First book I read by him and got me hooked.
James Patterson- Don't think I have a fave. Sail was really good, I remember staying up all night because I couldn't stop reading it. He has a bunch of series besides his stand alone books.Last edited by Legz422; 01-04-2022 at 01:57 PM.

The Song of Achilles
The only good Indians
A head full of ghosts
The devil in silver
If you enjoyed the movie bird box, you can always reach for the book since it’s honestly better. Same with the Netflix show “You”. The books are so much better.-SS is jealous of me crew-

Witcher is fantasy, i could list a plethora of fantasy series i've gone through / woudl recommend but that doesn't really fit in with what your preference was
I'm currently going through The Expanse books and those could technically fit as crime/mystery, just within a sci-fi setting. All great books.

I like Dan Brown.
The Davinci Code, Angels and Demons, Inferno, etc.
He is the only fiction author I have read (not counting all the goosebumps books when I was a kid)I only read thread titles and my own posts.

Glory Road by Robert A. Heinlein

Also Starship Troopers by Heinlein as well. Nothing like the movie. Heinlein would be considered a racist pig today.☆☆☆USA яєω☆☆☆

If you are new to fiction and like action driven stories then Patterson is a good choice. He is a bit formulaic, but it's a good formula.
- simple plots
- lots of action; not a lot of exposition/description
- not too long
You might browse the highest rated Young Adult titles too. I was in a YA phase for a while in my mid-30's because you get just as much plot, but with less filler IME.
I tend to look for different things from different genres. I think what set GOT apart from a lot of what came before that was the depth of the plot, the time put into character development, characters that were multi-dimensional- and then he would just kill them off.

For a dude trying to get into fiction? I've gotten a few friends into reading. The type who drink/club/do drugs and haven't read a book since dropping out of high school. Try out Red Rising brah. There are five books, and the characters, story, and action are all gold. It's also a relatively easy read (the first and second book are anyway; the author shows considerable growth in his writing skills as the series progresses), so I always thought of it as a good place to start for aspiring male readers.
That or The Lies of Locke Lamora. I've only read the first book, but it's a great self contained story. I already see a few people ITT recommending it too.Last edited by AD117; 01-04-2022 at 02:19 PM.
