- they're part of the 'cool' or 'in' crowd
- only care about looks and appearance
- Use/sell drugs/peds, etc
- talk to and sleep multiple partners
- machavellianism is their interpersonal style.
- very often they're close to being psychopathic, but are very narcissistic.
- brag about degenerate behaviour
- everybody knows about their degeneracy and they don't have any shame about it
- aware of their own flaws, yet refuse to fix them, because it takes too much effort.


It's almost as if there's a whole vibe of scummy and degenerate behaviour.

My buds and I were pretty 'degenerate' in high school, but we weren't bad kids. We'd get our older friend to buy beers for us at lunch time and shotgun them by the river. We were perpetually bored and understimulated in a crappy public school so we'd create our own fun by being pranksters and causing light mayhem at school. Bonfires in the woods every Friday, getting drunk, listening to heavy metal, playing in bands. We refer to it as general juvenile debauchery, though. People thought we were greasy headbangers that were going nowhere in life but we got that out of our system, grew up, and now we're all doing great. 15+ years later and we still aim to hang out a few times a year, talk about our antics, and have a bunch of fun together even in our 30s.

For a lot of people, this 'degeneracy' is just a phase. Most people are decent. The really greasy ones are just loudest on the internet and stick in your mind longest. I very rarely see someone I would classify as a true degenerate in person. They are few and far between. Most people are decent and just want to live their lives and find meaning.

I know of the type of people OP is talking about...I was sitting with my colleagues on our ob/gyn clerkship discussing certain topics, and then some sloot bursts out in front of the attending/director "omg..when I had my IUD put in, I couldn't fuc for days".
