In the TCM movies I've seen; origional, remake and prequel (the ones with R Lee Ermey as the fake Sheriff), Leatherface doesn't tend to attack people in open field where they see him coming and react accordingly. The attacks occured around the house or property, where Leath came from nowhere and caught the hapless kids off guard, or else just got the drop on them. The last girl survived in TCM as Leath chased her in daylight where his bulk slowed him down over distance. Toe-to-toe, you would not fair well against a tall, powerfully built chainsaw wielding monster.

The original movie wasn't really scary or meant to be too scary. It was more of a dark comedy. In fact there is no gore or blood in the original.
