Talk to a recruiter. Doing normie enlisted **** at 30 is going to drive you mad, but there might be some interesting jobs available to you if you've done anything worthwhile since graduating high school.

Already some solid advice in this thread so I'll just add this...
Even at the autist, naive age of 22, I was still so much older maturity-wise than the other kiddies that their personalities were the worst part of Basic.
At 30 you're going to want to choke a dude.
Ex.
> Lights go out.
> Kids start talking.
> I tell them to keep it down, people are trying to sleep.
> Kid responds with, "fukk you PTzFree, you ain't the drill sergeant"
and that pretty much sums up the people you'll meet.
I did have a couple dudes that were pretty cool and I got along with, but the majority were as described above. Lots of test in small confined spaces aimed in all the wrong directions.AP7 Crew

Join the Air Force. Had lots of blokes who were late twenties / early 30s who were in my technical training. Make sure you choose the right job, you'll be around mature people. 30 isn't to old to join, had a guy who was 36 in my basic, he got so much chit from the DS lol.
With that being said, you need to join for the right reasons. The reason listed in the OP is not enough to get you through, you'll probably fail out in basic srs.
EDIT - Basic will suck regardless. It'll suck even harder for you because you will stand out for being 30, unless you look young. But yeah, as previously mentioned, the hardest aspect for you being 30 would be dealing with the BS... I'm 30 now, I wouldn't go back on do it again. lol.Last edited by cutandrunmate; 05-14-2021 at 09:26 AM.

Second day of OSUT, bunk buddy tries to off himself. I'm stuck getting zero sleep the second day in a row because I have to go to the hospital with that moron.
Many of your experiences will be needlessly agonizing, because everyone around you is mentally retarded and has bad social skills. Unless you go SF, which I recommend if you're cut out for it27

This lol. Joined at 25 though. I wasn't the oldest at boot camp - I think most boot camp classes has at least 1 guy that's like 30 lol.
It does get slightly better after your done with training. Boot camp and my A school lasted like 8 months in total. Then had another few months of another school.
But once you get to your job, it isn't horrible. For me, it's basically like a normal job, around 40 hours a week plus have to stand a watch maybe once a month and have uniform inspections twice a year when we switch between dress whites and blues.
But until you make rank you will be on the same level as 18 year olds. You should be able to pick up on things faster though, and how the military game works.
Do your job but play the game if you want to make rank - same with any other job though.

I joined at 27. basic is going to suck do to young immature people. I would pick a MOS that's not going to be doing lay outs all day and stuck in the motor pool. so Intel, HR, computer related. Be prepared to get a sucky duty station first time around or you might luck out. I just PCS to Hawaii after being stuck at Fort Bliss and its been great so far.

I enlisted at 27 and just did 4 years, and got out.
It's a mixed bag going in when older. Most likely you will be able to take a lot of things in stride (not be very intimidated, like a lot of the younger kids may be), and if you're lucky HOPEFULLY you will get stationed with some really cool bros, even if they are younger and you're seen as the "old guy". I made some great friends while in.
Also - I was older and did enlist with a degree. I had to deal with a lot of doucebags having authority over me.
I was Navy, but if I could do it over again I would seriously want to consider doing an enlistment in the Air Force as a SERE.

Always wanted to join the air force and chase that scarlet or maroon beret, since I was like 16 years old. I would do it now at age 33 if I didn't have an autoimmune disease that disqualifies me from enlisting. If you want it then go for it. You're not getting any younger...this is your last opportunity.
