I don't think Russia even wants Ukraine. They already took the iron and coal areas. And took that mountain chokepoint in Northern Crimea. What Russia wants is the west to accept their annexation.


The fault is on the Ukrainians for not attacking. It's been revealed Poroshenko was going to send fighter jets to bomb Moscow but Obama talked him down. While Ukraine's military is obviously not the same size of Russia.

The difference is huge parts of the Russian military already tied down in Chechnya, border duties in Central Asia, the Baltic and Siberia. So Ukraine might have 6,000 tanks (of which 100% could be sent to fight Russia) but Russia can only send 50% to 80% of their 12,000 tanks to Ukraine. Russia can't easily beat Ukraine if Ukraine somehow has the same morale as them. Believe it or not but Ukraine is still Europe's #4 or #5 military. But in practice Ukraine military's morale is super low due to the huge amount of Russophiles in it (have they been purged yet? Who knows!).


Russia outnumbered Georgians 7:1 in that war with Georgia but still took 12 days to "win" and that was without besieging any major Georgian city. If Russia and Ukraine fought a proper war (no nukes) it would be 1:1 or 1:2 because of Russia's military having to stay in other theaters like Chechnya, Baltic, etc.
