Michigan senator trying to push for allowing a grey wolf hunt in Michigan

I felt this issue should have visibility. I am unsure if this is against the rules, but wolves are quite similar to our beloved dogs and figured members here would also be outraged at this.

Grey wolves were recently taken off the endangered species list by the prior US administration. That decision is currently being reviewed. In the mean time, a senator Ed McBroom from Michigan is trying to push for grey wolf hunting. Hunters are upset that the wolves are eating deer, as there are less to hunt for sport. The people of Michigan voted in 2012 on a ballot question to not allow wolf hunting. That decision was disregarded by Ed McBroom in 2013 and they allowed a wolf hunt anyway.

These hunting groups are at it again and this issue needs to be out in the mainstream to stop these people and draw national attention to this.

You need to understand hunting is an important part of our ecosystem. Meateater recently covered a similar topic but I believe it was for a different state. But in essence, grey wolves population getting too large is not a good thing. This is not the 1700s anymore where animal populations in North America could run amuck unchecked. An out of control wolf population will decimate livestock as well as certain wild animals.




I live in a residential neighborhood (Some fields/pastures behind my house as I'm on the edge of a city). And we are having issues with coyotes coming into our yards. Which is hazardous to small pets to say the least. Even though I live in a city. In a residential neighborhood. I'm about to start shooting wild coyotes out my back door.


Obviously no wolves here. But if said coyotes were wolves. I'd be capping them where its legal or not. If they make wolf hunting legal and regulated they can keep the populations in check in a safer manner.

Anti hunting advocates will never acknowledge the need for hunting & population control. And I guarantee you people that are against the hunting of predatory animals do not own outdoor pets or live-stock in a rural or semi-rural area.

These people are trying to pretend like wolves are cute and cuddly dogs. Make no mistake about it, they will brutally kill anything they need to when they are hungry.


I'm not anti wolf in the least. I think its cool as hell the species has come off the endangered list. They do need to be protected. But I also recognize in some cases populations need to be kept in check in certain areas.

BTW I find wolves are fascinating. One of the coolest animals in North America hands down.

Coyotes here in Fort Worth are killing peoples small dogs daily. They come right through the fences grab what they can and then haul ass. Fast little fukers.

The op said the hunters were upset because there were less deer to hunt, not that but the wolves were posing a threat to humans, livestock etc. If the latter then yes purge them.

Wolves are one of the most intelligent wild animals in existence. They aren't going to go extinct because they killed all of the deer in their area. They'll broaden their range and find new species to hunt. Should the deer population of that area be killed off to near extinction levels so the wolves can thrive?


They will begin targeting live-stock. Sheep, goats, cows, chickens, pigs, etc. The only question is, how big of a dent do you want them to do in the deer population before they start expanding their territory into places inhabited by humans?


I don't think there are many documented cases of wolves hunting humans. At least, for food. But I have no doubt that if need be they'll harvest a hiker or jogger.

Yep. Nobody hunts them around here. Now we are seeing them at the edge of the city and even in the city at night time. A few weeks ago I heard them screaming and put a light out my back door and there was a pack of about 6 or 7 of the 40-50 yards from my house.

What the real danger in is when their natural prey populations decrease, they'll expand their hunting grounds and eat whats available. That could be domesticated live stock, domesticated pets such as your loving family bow wow and even attack people.

Yes, any legislation that tries to outlaw it is blocked by legislators from Tennessee and Kentucky where it is done mainly.

The DNR (dep of natural resources) in Michigan will regulate the number of wolf tags given out per season. They know how many wolves should be taken per year to sustain a healthy population.

There are consequences if populations get too large, that’s why sissys need to be kept quiet.

Look the way game wardens manage populations and decide tags is much different then 40-50 years ago when “a dead wolf is a good wolf” led to them getting decimated.

But they have had free reign with nothing to keep them in check for awhile and all around the country the population is growing too large for the space available.


It won’t be a free for all, game wardens care about conservation, they will decide how much the population needs to be trimmed and limit the tags to the appropriate amount.
