Societies where they all decide to contribute to the overall benefit of the nation as a whole tend to do quite well. This can be under communism (China) or in other places like South Korea, Australia and Japan.
One of the things that led to the decline of America is the attitude that every person could do whatever they wanted because of "muh rights" and they stopped caring about anyone else but themselves and the people who supported their views. That and a total lack of respect for anyone who establishes authority or basic laws, whether it be cops or politicians. A lot of Americans are rapidly moving their country towards being a third world mess where anyone can do anything they want without any consequences because they believe it is their right to do things that are only good for the individual and not society as a whole.

Close enough for horseshoes.
Definitely has contributed.
@ OP: I don't know that it can be stopped. But I do believe that our best chance is to embrace:
- Respect
- Empathy
- Kindness
Because we need to nurture unity and because extremism is very rarely the right answer to any problem.
We The People need to block out or shut down the factions that actively divide us against each other and participate in a real dialogue.
Conservatives, Libertarians, and Progressives can all contribute to solving our problems if each can respect the others' opinions as valid based on origination from different cultures and personal histories.
Those arrayed against us regularly push:
- Fear
- Anger
- Division
Be afraid; your personal tribe is under attack, you need to look to the powerful to protect you.
Be angry; your life is less than you desire because of "those other people", conveniently not the people actually in power.
And always division, chopping us up into smaller and smaller identity groups so that the potential strength of We The People is diffused into scattered minority interests all set in competition against one another.
This isn't some pie in the sky, rainbows and unicorns, hippie idealism.
This is straight pragmatic truth as I see it.
The 80% of us that are in between the extreme fringes on the left and right need to start talking and find a way to pull together.
And if you want to have a real conversation with someone that doesn't devolve into a pie fight or end in participants shutting down and withdrawing then you need to treat each other with respect, empathy, and kindness.INTP Crew

If there was unfettered capitalism then lobbyists and billionaires would have very little power. Instead we have a massive federal and state governments which try and control everything and billionaires seize upon this to make it work for them. The answer is more freedom and more power to the individual. Don't get caught up in class warfare. Focus on allowing people the freedom to improve their lives with as little restraint and control from the government and those who pull their strings.

Mostly white, right leaning self described small govt fiscal conservatives males are the reason for Americas decline.
We allowed it to fester and grow for decades instead of immediately killing it in its tracks. Look in the mirror, take accountability, and act accordingly going forward. Its never too late to right your own ship. Blaming others for you lack of action, only keeps you stuck in the mud going no where fast.

Depends in what way you mean.
Culturally. I think its the rot of morals. Its a natural tendency of dominant societies to rot from the inside. Look at Rome. Look at Greece. In periods of time where groups have strong adversaries society is focused on them and stays stronger. But when you are in a superior position without any major threats (at least perceived threats), then society starts eroding from the inside. Most people don't go to sleep afraid of Nazis or Russians or China any more so plenty of time to worry about other things such as rights and wrongs and societal issues. I think the internet also has something to do with that.
Financially. For a large Country we are still strong financially. But China is gaining due to there huge population. We have basically allowed them to steal our technological advantage by moving our manufacturing to there. Hard to keep secrets and advantages when you hire them to make the items for you. What little we don't send to china they just out right steal. See the story the just broke a few days ago where they had hired a scientist to basically feed them information who was a Harvard scientist who also did work for our government.
Technology: Same as above really. They aren't caught up to us yet, but we are certainly doing everything we can to help them out.
Militarily. Our lead has certainly been eroded from what it was before but we still have a strong position. We have the ability to still strike china and they don't really have the ability to strike us back. At the way this is going it will be changed in the decades to come if things don't change.
Space: If it wasn't for Musk and Space X I would say they are already ahead of us. They have capabilities we simply don't have any more. This is mostly due to neglect/lack of funding/lack of desire by our government. So simple neglect.
