Whats the best and most needed equiptment for a home gym ?

I tell everyone who asks this question the same thing. Find a set of free weights, you can usually buy a set of olympics for 100 bucks or so. This would about 300 lbs. Good to start with. Then I would find a bench that allowed me to inclkine and decline. But check the weight capability on the bottom tag. Make sure it will hold you weight and the weight s that you intend to use.Thsi woulsd be all you need to start to workout. I have used this set up at home for yers and I have no regrets. But get a good bench not a cheap flimsy weider or something like it. My bench was 135.00 not bad since I will have it until i probably croak. At the gym we use the same equipment but I have added soem other stuff to. to accomadate the teens.

I have them.
How do i do leg presses at home and squats ?
-
Your Mother Loves Me
I currently have a bench, squat rack, power tower(pull-up and dip tower), 2 eliptical machines, and a wide variety of dumbells. I am planning on buying a vertical leg press in the next couple of weeks, since they are about 1/10 of the price of a regular leg press. Once I find space for it, I will go buy a pec deck. I will never be finished building my home gym, I will most likely be updating it at least once a year until i stop bbing.

You asked what you can do for squats... they do make a bench that can be used for squats. and if you look real hard you can find one with a leg curl attachement. But for a start up home gym thsi is the way to go. If you are like most guys you can't afford the luxurious **** and don't even have enough room for it.

Don't waste money on the calf raise, get that squat/leg press thing and do toe raises to work your calves.

I bought a bench that had a leg curl and preacher curl attachment on it. And if ya move the seat up, it can be used as a squat rack to. Its what i would say "A ok" I got it from "fleet-farm" if ya have ever heard of it.

ain't easy being beezy...
- Heavy duty power rack
- Olympic barbell set + weights
- Flat bench
= all that 95% of the training populace need.
Stats(5RM): 165kg squat, 105kg bench, 182.5kg deadlift.

Negged for spamming this forum. And by the way, thanks for the obvious on the home gym. Don't you need to get back in the kitchen?!

Cheers on the 'parrot' thing. as far as I'm aware I'm the only person not recommending a whole bunch of other junk like what you guys do.

?? Maybe I am reading this wrong. Are you saying that "you guys" recommend a whole lot more equipment than you listed (Power rack, Olympic barbell set, bench)? Thats pretty much the standard answer from all of the crew members at least, often followed by dumbbells as part #4 of the equation. If I misread you, I apologize.
But since you brought it up, I will say that some people will also desire some type of cardio equipment, whether as simple, cheap and small as a jump rope, something different and challenging like a heavy bag to punch and kick away at or the standard treadmil, exercise bike or elliptical.
To anyone still intersted in the original question brought up in this thread, it has been answered. But if you want something completely different (and very cheap), this is a neat article with suggestions. FYI-I have nearly everything in this article and love it.

I'm the third person bringing this up, but what are you talking about and who is "you guys"?
I thought your suggestion of "Rack, weights, and a bench" was right on, but if you are talking about the regulars, you are way off saying we "recommend" people buy a bunch of other crap....dead wrong. We continually say do exactly what you are talking about. A couple of us (probably all if it was known) have even said you can really get in good shape with no weights and just using your body to move around.
There's all kinds of discussion that can go on here concerning equipment. Just because we have the space and the ability to buy accessory stuff does not mean we think everybody can, should, or would buy all the crap we do. Its almost like a hobby for some of us, and at least for me, I just have fun getting stuff and upgrading. I use all the stuff I have, some of it more often...but all of it in some manner. But I don't at all think its "necessary".
There's newbs that come here, kids, and/or people that don't have the money, space or inclination to buy a bunch of stuff. That's fine. What they should get is a......RACK, WEIGHTS, AND BENCH................that mantra was started here way before I came here...and so way before you did too.
You may be touting good advice, but it aint new, it ain't novel, and you ain't alone.
You want to attack Hardkore cause he called you out.....you should have it out with him.....I'm sure he'll handle himself fine. Get your facts straight though before you start trying to establish what "we" as a group advocate or believe.

He is actually the same guy who refuted my recommendation for VFF's as a multipurpose shoes (lifting and running). I pretty much always recommend them, but won't argue if someone wants to use something different..after all, there is no money in it for me. He mentioned that powerlifters probably wouldnt be flexible enough to use them...which wasnt what the OP was asking about.
See page 3 of this thread to see what I am talking about.

I have no problem with the guy, really, he actually seems knowledgeable. But I certainly dont want him throwing around "you guys" along with completely false information. I would assume that "you guys" means the regulars/equipment crew, but that, again, is just an assumption.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. I believe a great workout can be had with very little equipment and a home gym.
An olympic bench, squat rack, and 300 pounds worth of weights can get you 90% of what you need to accomplish. Depending on your goals, it might be all you even need. All those fancy machines at the gym are simplified replacements for free weight exercises.

My apologies. I was pretty ticked off I got labeled a parrot and I get pissed off at this forum sometimes by the amount of people who answer threads like 'I have $50. Advise me on an advanced home gym.'
I seem to be the only one telling people to bite the bullet and buy a heavy duty rack, barbell and bench.
I really paid the price by cutting corners when I put together my home gym, now I have a shakey rack and a barbell which will bend once I get 250+ on it. I advise because I don't like people making my mistake.

I said sub-forum, not forum. How can it be almost a year when you signed up on Feb. 09 to begin with?!
Again, you're pissing alot of people off with your stupid comment which you apologize for and than out of all surprises you state it again. Are you really that attention-hungry? Geez, you're acting like a damn female...
