Does anyone else use Alexa at work? I'm an engineer and I use it occasionally for spelling (for programs without spell check), checking the distance between cities for freight estimates, confirming unit conversions, and for reminders like "call Dave in 10 minutes," "remind me that coffee is ready in 5 minutes"

Personally....I'd never have one and wouldn't want to be within 50' of the trendy "Alexa" units/technology.
I'm no conspiracy nut by any stretch but this unit and it's clones are bad news as I think the technology will be abused and the eves dropping by them will have no boundaries.
But....that's just me...carry on.Last edited by Wayne Evans; 09-14-2020 at 11:39 AM.

It's bad enough without Alexa listening in. One night I remarked to my wife we should look into getting 'such & such' and then not 15 minutes later I get an e-mail selling 'such & such'. And no neither of us had searched for 'such & such' it was an off-hand remark while watching tv, but we both had our phones in the room.

I've worked places where Google search and Google translate were blocked, Alexa/Siri/etc are voice, kind of equivalent of them, and would have been blocked also (I never tried it there)
Imagine you work for Dr Evil and you are planning the invasion of Greenland before a president of a large country can buy/invade it himself. You keep Googling landing craft, raiding craft, beaches in Greenland, draft of an assault ship, how many fighter jets does the Greenland airforce have, etc etc. Where do you think that information just went? Hardly keeping it confidential.
Don't forget Google is learning from all the searches everyone makes collectively - remember the "Justin Beiber syphilis" hack? And Google also learns all the searches and advert clicks You make.
Alexa is the same, possibly less regulated and accountable for information use.
If you conduct anything confidential or have any confidential information you are required to keep confidential, stop using those tools!

Exactly what I perceived would occur regarding those darling additions to our every day life.
Your experience is cause for some serious concern.
I think they were designed for exactly what you experienced but promoted under a very devious guise.
Having a device of that nature in one's home always listening in?....never knowing how it could eventually be used against you?.....believing it's actually a safe tool to use?
Not for me or my proximity.
I don't know anyone that has one at this time but they seem to have their popularity base.

Holy shvt!
Ok....allow me to re-phrase......"Your experience is cause for some very, very serious concern for any discerning person owning a smart phone."
BTW....I got my first cell phone about one year ago.
One of those dated flip phone configurations.
I'm starting to get the hang of it and just use the phone/texting and I've never been on line with it....not that I'm safe from being spied upon.

Yes! I remember going out with a bunch of friends. I suffer motion sickness a lot and another friend said she does too. My husband does NOT get motion sick at all, ever, and never had any reason to do internet searches about motion sickness. Anyway I mentioned to her I had some success with Bonine over Dramamine. This was in a busy and loud restaurant. For about a week after that my husband got Bonine ads every single time he went online. Definitely NOT coincidental.
Another time he met some colleagues at lunch and one of them mentioned the kid's science project and how he had bought him some germanium (not exactly the kind of stuff one routinely looks up, right?) to do it. Again the first time my husband went on Amazon he got a suggested product: germanium.
Phuk this snooping crap.Follow my 2018 competition prep here:

This happened to us too. My wife and I were talking about getting a new bike for our Grandson. Next thing you know we are getting FB ads for bikes. Neither of us had time to do a search on bikes prior. Only thing we can figure out is that our Alexa was nearby and picked up on our conversation. That's pretty damn creepy.

After my mom died, my sister got my dad a Google Home. My dad is blind, so it's really helpful for him, living alone. He asks Google for the time, and the weather, to play his favourite music too. He'll ask it to set alarms/wake-up calls for him as well. It is super handy for him.
One day, he asked for a particular song, and the voice replied that she didn't know that song but played another for him which he liked. He said, "Gosh she works hard, that one. Never a day off!"No drama: You know where we are.
