There was some big rugby tournament on in Europe - no idea which one because I don't care about sport at all. Every pub was decked out with 84" screens and posters to get punters in. All Blacks got knocked out early, like match one or something. This national tragedy was on the news every single night for days. I know because I caught the news every night in my hotel room.

Flocks of Kiwis had gone to see the matches in Europe, expecting the whole thing to take a couple of weeks or whatever - there was news footage of plane-loads of them came flying back immediately because these Neanderthals were literally unable think of a single reason to holiday in Europe if they couldn't spend the entire time watching the rugby.

The majority of kiwi's don't care about rugby. Anecdotally I can tell you this I ran RWC forecasting at Chorus (NZ's fibre infrastructure provider), a huge part of the expected viewership being some 55% don't. Of those that do some are very vocal and passionate, which gives off the impression everyone is.
