Houston, as we know is seeing a big spike. I wonder if the 60,000+ people who attended the George Floyd funeral had anything to do with it - possibly as a super-spreader event?

I am sure it is a combination of folks tired of being locked down for 2-3 months, hints by the president, protesters,and some people being lazy and apathetic. It takes thinking and real work to be so careful when out and about, 1 screw up and your positive.

I think it is partly all of the above as you say, but the funeral probably had something to do with it. Close gatherings like this we see in Florida and California by yound and old going to the beach.

7000 - 8000 people die in the US everyday. How many of the 600-1000 daily deaths we are seeing now would have died anyway?

Thats the question I have asked repeatedly but of course it's pretty much unanswerable. We have all sorts of people freaking out over a death number that amounts to a small amount when put into perspective.

Yeah, I was watching those stats at the state level pretty closely at the height of things here. We were seeing higher than normal death rates at the time, but that doesn’t tell the full story because I think our total cases were MASSIVELY under reported. It was likely here within a week of being in the population in Wuhan being a world hub that Chicago is. We had a strain that was nearly identical to Wuhan genetically. I think I had it in mid January and I remember also seeing A LOT of death notices up at work for retirees and parents of current staff.

It is primarily killing people who are on borrowed time, so even when its really surging hard, it’s essentially killing people who would maybe be dead in 1-3 years so perhaps we will have a period of years of lower than normal death rates...It’s hard to know just how many people have had it without huge and accurate serology testing. I do believe that natural post infection resistance from antibodies are partially responsible for the lower rates now in earlier hot spots. The mitigation methods certainly help, but we had stringent lockdowns from the start in March, and cases continued to rise (even percentage of positive rates). Still a lot of unknowns. Viruses are constantly mutating too, hopefully to be less virulent (which is to the advantage of the virus not to kill the host).

You can get the stats from CDC morbidity and mortality weekly reports. Look at a few years by month and compare to current total mortality. Then you can also see the deaths attributed to COVID in comparison with total deaths.

Florida on that IDGAF time. Now that testing availability is there, these surges will be interesting to watch. Likely younger people at parties, bars, beaches, some will undoubtedly spread it on to people in higher risk groups (parents, grandparents) or others at work etc. The massive protests were likely a catalyst that helped really get things rolling. This is where that “2 more weeks brah“ might be spot on. Of course, if higher risk populations are taking necessary precautions for themselves death rates will likely not be as bad as NY etc from the same number of reported cases. These high case counts won’t be dropping anytime soon imo.

I have not seen what the protocol is for PPE changes in test sites, but I can assure you that there is an increased risk in that setting. 500+ positives last few days in DC, there’s a reasonable chance that those arms reaching into your car to probe your sinuses have viable virus particles on them.

Yea, there's no way in hell I'm going into one of those sites to be tested when I'm not having any symptoms.

Undiagnosed Cancer plus diagnosed, lots
Hypertension lots(stressful times/chitty diets)
Diabetes, not sure, not my area.

This Covid-19 is just new, and docs are talking about strokes and blood clots in young people.
