It’s wonderful that your marriage is working out so far but no need to be smug about it and act superior. You’re only at 7 years which is not long at all, and anything can still happen.

Divorce is real and pretty much every divorced person thought it would never happen to them. It’s natural to want to differentiate yourself from divorced people and think about how you are different so it could never happen to you. But reality is it can happen to any marriage.

I don't think I'm superior, I'm just a confident man. My parents are divorced. All relationships have challenges to overcome.

13 years together

My ex had a secret life of extensive cheating and drugs and other shady things. We started making a lot of money and he basically just wanted a party lifestyle. He did the double life for a while and then I guess he decided the marriage was interfering too much with his partying. Plus there was other shady stuff going on financially.

He showed severe sociopathy throughout all this so I think he has some major personality disorders in addition to the addictions. He had no shame, no remorse, no guilt, no empathy, no attachment, none of the typical human emotions. Plus he is a very skilled liar and manipulator. He could lie without any tells. During the breakup I would sometimes ask him a question I knew the answer to just to watch him lie. It was chilling how good he was. Zero nervousness or any other tells.

NOT saying this is a typical case obv. My situation was very extreme and unusual. The typical divorce scenario is probably just a regular affair by a regular person with normal emotions.

I can't swing a dead cat without hitting 9 old man Dan Bilzerians in Scottsdale srs. They are rare overall, probably <5% of older single men, but they exist in every major city.

But the basics were in order: I genuinely loved him, I was always completely honest, I was always completely loyal, the marriage was central to my life, and I don’t have any addictions.

None of those were true on his part. And his issues were very extreme, far beyond normal marital problems.

My main responsibility was choosing to marry him in the first place, and then being too naive and too codependent to realize what was happening and to protect myself.

This is similar to my thoughts. The worst scenario is being trapped with responsibilities you dont want.

But the alternative is crap too. I think the best bet is to have a serious relationship but no formal marriage or kids so you can escape if necessary

I grew up in a household with a mom that had all the indicators of borderline personality disorder. As a kid, I never knew who I was coming home to - a calm yet mean, terse mother or a screaming highly animated banshee. The walk home from school every day felt tortuous. There was always an atmosphere of hostility in my household, with the understanding that my siblings and I were to be quiet and soft-spoken, lest we wake my mother's lunatic temperament, which could appear at the drop of a hat.

In the near 20 years since moving out of my parents home, I still revel in the peace and calmness of living alone. From my perspective, every day is a spa day just by being able to come home to an environment that is devoid of the hysteria I grew up with. Like I said, its something that I still enjoy to this day. In short - What problem do I have that marriage & kids is the solution to?

I grew up in the same type of environment. Bipolar mother with an alcohol problem. Hated being at home growing up. She’s on her 4th husband now. Lots of thirsty guys out there that will put up with just about anything. (Wrecked cars, police, physical abuse). I’m a homebody/introvert probably because of it. I enjoy being at home in my own environment where I have control. Girlfriends who bring unnecessary drama into my life are forgotten about. People who meet me for the first time or have known me through work but never asked, can’t believe I don’t have kids and am not married. But with my background it would make sense.
I’m not afraid of being single at 50 compared to the fat pushover “Beta” husbands with miserable wives at home.
