First car I got behind the wheel of was a 67 GTO I think. Drivers ed was a VW wagon. Learned to drive a stick on a 67 rambler rebel with three on the treeReal piece of crap and horrible clutch mechanism. My uncle taught me to shift without the clutch on his Karman Ghia, which came in handy down the road.

My dad must have had some libertarian views, because he and I would visit his mother who lived in town early Sunday morning when the traffic was very light. I was 13 years old driving on the expressway in our '71 F-100 pick-up truck.

My dad met me after school in my new-to-me '81 Chevette (it was spring 1984). Mine was a two door, 4-speed, with luggage rack I think I put three alternators on it, and I adjusted the clutch cable about every 3-4 months (it had a retaining ring that you had to relocate after pulling the cable tighter). I made a speaker box with two 6x9's in the "hatch," and I had an equalizer/booster that was probably hissing between songs at 80 dBA or so

Sweet, not sure on how they came up with the name for that car but down here (Louisiana) the Cajun French word for shrimp is chevrette. May or may not be related but it would make sense because of the cars size.

I went through a few alternators on my 79 too. Nice thing is that they are stupid easy to do.

My current Chevette only has AM. I love it atually

JT, The missus and I bought a 1980 Chevette new, the cheapest model they had. We had just gotten married. We drove the hell out of that thing, you couldn't kill it. Probably one of the more reliable vehicles I ever owned. It was rear wheel drive so I put my tool box in the trunk for weight in winter, It was a lot of weight. I took it in for an exhaust fix. When they put it on the hoist. the coil springs fell out of her. I think the only thing keeping them in place was the weight of the tools LOL. I even towed a small trailer with that thing for a few years. What a great little car that was to us.

Last year I took my 78 to a local car show with about 300 cars. Only Chevette there. I parked it next to my 54 3100 that is pretty mint. More people came over to see the "vette" than the truck. Suprising how many people have a story. Was fun listening to them. Thanks for sharing yours.

One or two bolts and a wiring harness IIRC.

My friend had an automatic and we "raced" one day It was neck and neck, but he eked out the win. I should have challenged him the following year when I got a new clutch. I could actually "bark 'em" in first AND SECOND gears for a few weeks.

EDIT: one more story: My mom and I drove it to her sister's funeral 8 hours away. The freon had slowly leaked out, and it was still spring so we drove with the windows down. That was the only time I had a sunburn on ONE arm

Nice classic . Did yours have the 6 or a V8 ? We had a Nova around town with a built 350 SBC that could roast the tires for blocks .

I wasn’t as fortunate, and drove a 63 Mercury Monterey . 352 engine and an absolute gas pig .
It didn’t have the sliding rear window which was weird ,as mostly all of them did .
