Just about to drop several grand on some equipment, got a yellow bench already unfortunately. But struggling choosing between black or white equipment.
Does black stuff seem imposing in a smallish room?
Does white stuff look a little cheap?
Bone question really but don't want to regret the choice as I will be stuck with it for life.

Black
White equipment just looks dated to me, like a 90's or early 2000's home gym full of Body Solid, Parabody, Keys, or Tuff Stuff."What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

I agree with Murphyreedus.. I have a few white pieces but mostly Silver with Black combo pieces. The White pieces seem to look older where other colors seem more modern to me. Almost all older gym equipment was white. Body Solid,Cybex and others were all white and then the trend shifted to silver and now it seems color combos are endless.

It doesn’t matter if it’s black or white.
I was against white equipment but bought a white hammer row and it looks fine. For used equipment I think the key is the condition and pad colors.
For new I would probably choose black over white but if other colors were available, such as gray, then I would choose a different color.I quote with pics. ()---() York Barbell Club #78 (DD) ()---()

Agreed, black and silver/sky gray is a slick combo, my power rack has both.
My plate loaded row has a bit of silver, black and red, but aside from that everything is pretty much black, silver/gray.
I'm in no hurry due to the circumstances, but wouldn't even mind adding some Rogue Six Shooter plates and/or Rogue machined plates to go along with my black and hammertone plates at some point (silver plates with black lettering is badass in a home gym).

I prefer white colored equipment, my adjustable bench and weight tree have white powdercoat and my rower is a light grey close to white. I had the choice of a black rower but the light grey looked better to me, I am presently using it 6+ hours a week doing steady state cardio on it and the lighter color seems a bit more welcoming. I got into lifting in the mid 2000s and a lot of the equipment in my favorite gym back then was white powdercoated cybex and hammer strength, so it has some nostalgia for me.
Black equipment is really in right now though and I think part of the appeal is it all matches no matter what brand you buy, rogue, rep, titan, etc.
The pancake plates for my dumbbells are mismatching grey and black.

I’m with you . I had a white bench and it didn’t work for me. I may paint my dumbbell stands yet two, but I find the white makes them look as though there floating .
I like black and I also like grey . I put some orange into it to give it some contrast . Still need to paint the existing yellow stuff orange .
No one seems to like the orange that much ,and I’ve had people tell me to stay with the yellow
The bench looks out of place . I sold it to a friend
But on the dumbbell racks I think white suits it
This is an older pic . Most of it was yellow
Here’s a recent pic with new black squat racks being installed . Anything left that’s yellow is going to be phased out to orange .
The reason I went to orange is the new dumbbells and plates have orange on them .
Make Misc great again

While I'm not particularly a fan of white equipment pieces by themselves in my opinion, I gotta say I do like the color combo on power racks when the uprights are black with white accents (I prefer silver/sky gray accents more), but the white is equally awesome and does make it pop and stand out.
I think the other reason black is an in color on equipment is because it hides its flaws (scratches, some rust and dirt) a bit better than white which tends to expose it more (much like the debate between black and white sneakers...although I'm more of a white sneaks person myself).

All of my larger pieces are black with red upholstery, with the smaller pieces (spin bikes, Airdyne, dip stand, etc) being black/red or grey/black/red.
I like the fact that it (mostly) matches and looks like I put some thought into the equipment selection.
The overall look is more in line with a black iron gym than a corporate/hotel fitness center."What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Even though this GYM is almost perfectly planned, I see the slight mismatch in the color combination. How come the towel on the bar in the rack is black with red letters ?
Isn't it suppose to be Gray and Orange so that I can match with the benches?

I'm in my mid 50's and when I first started working out in the late 70's early 80's all my equipment I had was black frame and brown padding. In the 90's I remember all the gyms had white frames, mostly black padding and to a much lesser extent white frames and royal blue padding. The white frame and black padding was popular up until around mid to late 2000's, then grey and black frames became popular in the late 2000's in to the 2010's.
When I use to visit my parents on Long Island during the 2000's, I use to gym hop, they had so many great gyms out there and most gyms were white frame and black padding. Bev Francis's Gold's Gym now Powerhouse gym had everything in different color combos. The oldest equipment I remember was Nautilus which was blue frame, black padding and the Icarian was black frame, black padding.
So, in my long winded way, I'm saying black frame and black or brown padding is very old school if that's a look you like.
1970's powerlifting legend Jon Cole here with black frame equipment, this picture looks like it's from the early 70's.

I miss the equipment that you'd see in a lot of photoshoots in the 80's with red frames and black upholstery. Sometimes it was yellow frame and black pads. For some reason i associate those colors with "hardcore" gyms and i definitely miss the colorful equipment. of course, i never trained in a gym with that kind of equipment other than this one gym.

NYSC Commack, NY (Long Island)
I trained at this gym a couple of times in the mid 2000's, they had black padding, white frame. Now it looks like they got new Precor equipment with black frame and tan padding, it looks pretty good maaaaann!
