Next time you are at the store take a look to see how many old guys are with young women. Those are your actual chances.

I don't think these dudes really believe they can land a higher quality 25 year old female as a 38 year old man then they could as a 28 year old man.

Sure, they can get "a" hot 25 year old woman at 40 but their choices are much, much more limited. I would imagine only 20%-25% of people in general are interested in dating a decade out of their age bracket

20 dating 30 may be a "big" gap for some. If one person is worrying about their chemistry finals while the other is worrying about their mortgage, you can see how such relationships don't have much basis other than physical compatibility. However, 30 dating 40 is not nearly as big a gap. There's much more chance to have common ground.

However, to a 20-year old woman looking to start a family quickly, she's much better off with a 30-year old mate, rather than a 20-year old. Those 10 years add a lot in maturity and career development. The 20-year old is still a throw of the dice. The 30-year old has enough accomplishments to be judged on his ability to stick around and provide. This has always been the case if you go back through history. The most desirable women largely choose (or are chosen by) older men destined for success.
