Question Vitamin B5 For Acne!!!

I currently use Proactiv, but recently I've began to break out more. I'm going to buy some Vitamin B5 and was wondering how much I should take a day for acne? I read on a thread that recommends 10g/day; would that be an ideal dosage?

Thanks for the feedback.

How long have you been using the proactiv? Generally you break out more than normal the first 2 weeks or so.

So, what would be an ideal dosage of Vitamin B5/day for acne (Would 10g/day be ok)?

I've heard B5 is good for acne, but I've been using supplementing more Zinc into my diet and it definitely works. You want to use about 50-70 mg's of zinc per day .... I've definitely noticed less inflamation, and less oily skin, which in turn leads to less breakouts. Try out some zinc ... it's cheap to buy 50 mg tablets of it as well.

i can confirm that. i think its getting all the oil and dirt out of your skin. personally, i find the face mask makes all the difference. i'm also on low dose antibiotics. if you can use the antibiotics for about 2 months in a row it should clear up most of your acne problems for a while

10gms is a little much, a would recommend around 7 personally. DEFINITELY start out with a lower dose then ramp up to that amount. If you start out that high your stomach will blow out your ass.

BTW it works great for me, you will start to see dry skin after the first 4 or 5 days then youll know its working.

its the pantothenic acid in B-5 thats good for acne, you can buy pantothenic acid on its on... I got some (100 caps for like 10 bucks) at 500 mg a cap, i take 2 a day (1g) it really does stop skin from being oily and cleared the small bit of acne i had right up, however i find it kinda dries out my skin.

Is "Pantothenic Acid" the same as "d-calcium pantothenate"?

So how low should I start out at and how much should I bump it up by daily?

Can Zinc be used with B5 (Pantothenic Acid) as an anti-acne combo?

What's the difference between "Zinc (from zinc gluconate dihydrate, zinc picolinate)" and "Zinc (as zinc gluconate, zinc picolinate)"?

Zinc Picolinate is soppose to be absorbed better but it's more expensive.

When i had acne, i would use zinc gluconate becuase i could get it very very cheap at walmart. Took 50mg at nightime before bed, and i can say it worked somewhat.

I also used 10gms of b5, it worked alright as well. Nothing spectacular

Yea, until you get off the antibiotics, and become more susceptible to acne, due to your natural flora being wiped out, which makes your immune system that much more vulnerable. Even some of these low-dose antibiotics still have a degree of effect on your bodies natural/symbiotic microbe population.

I think Proactiv is kind of crappy, its a temporary, topical solution to an external problem, which loses effectiveness over time. If you want to go that route, same some money and visit acne.org and check out the regimen they have there, which is ultimately more effective than Proactiv, and a hell of a lot cheaper.

How does OptiZinc work?

Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in numerous enzyme systems the body needs to keep healthy and fit. OptiZinc and L-OptiZinc are patented 1:1 complexes of zinc and methionine, the amino acid best absorbed by the body. Studies show that OptiZinc and L-OptiZinc are absorbed better, retained longer and are more effective than other zinc supplements tested.

How is OptiZinc different?

Research shows that a high-fiber meal can inhibit zinc absorption to under 3% of the amount consumed. A 1992 study showed that OptiZinc actually resists dietary fiber and phytate, and increases zinc absorption better than ordinary zinc supplements tested. In addition, unlike other zinc supplements, OptiZinc will not adversely affect copper absorption.

OptiZinc and L-OptiZinc are the only premium zinc supplements FDA-approved safe for human nutrition. Some zinc binding ligands, such as picolinic acid, have been shown to remove iron from cells and cause anemia, or increase lead absorption. OptiZinc and L-OptiZinc will not remove iron from cells or cause anemia. In fact, a 1991 study showed that a combination of zinc and methionine actually inhibits lead absorption and reduces lead levels in the blood.

I've noticed the best results using that form especially.

Um, B5 IS Pantothenic Acid.

I can't recommend the B5 treatment, because although B5 is water soluble, and therefore presents no long-term toxicity, as compared to Vitamin A and E, there are still several side-effects that I've heard about, ranging from mild nausea, to incontinence, basically being unable to control your bladder.

There are no real longterm studies done on the safety of long-term Vitamin B5 use. There have been MANY MANY positive results, but, its something that I think needs to be looked into further, because as it is, people are basically guinea pigs at this stage, as we don't know the longterm implications of such therapy.

When i had acne, i would use zinc gluconate becuase i could get it very very cheap at walmart. Took 50mg at nightime before bed, and i can say it worked somewhat.

I also used 10gms of b5, it worked alright as well. Nothing spectacular

Mike
Thanks. So which is better to get then, "Zinc (from zinc gluconate dihydrate, zinc picolinate)" or "Zinc (as zinc gluconate, zinc picolinate)"?

Yes, people have used this combo. I would recommend taking Optizinc in the morning and at night, and then, if you decide to, using 5-10 grams of the B5 during the day, in split doses.

The easiest way to do this is to buy the B5 in powdered form and take 3-4 grams at a time, any more than and you'll be seriously hurting, or sitting on the toilet.

People will run the B5 anywhere from 8-16 grams a day for the first 5-10 days, and then after that, a dose of 5g a day for another 3 weeks, after that, they generally reduce it to a "maintenance" dose of 2.5-3g p/day.

What would be a better option other than the Proactic/acne.org one (temporary)?

So Optizinc would be a better choice than Zinc?

Thanks man, I'm going to use OptiZinc and B5 then. What dosages should I take of OptiZinc?

I rember I started taking b5 I think about 2 years ago because I had some acne. I took 8-10g a day, apperently that's a good dosage. If I rember right I took it for a little over a month.

All it did was make me break out worse then ever. In these weird cysts too.
Maybe it'll work for you I don't know. Plus it was expensive.

You know what worked for me? Efas (as in fish oil) and zinc.

How many mg do you use? Yeah, same here. Proactiv has helped, but I still breakout in certain areas.

I remember it was at about a month. A bit over, maybe like 5 weeks or so.

I stopped when I noticed it was acctually making me break out. Just like with everything, one person can have a diferent reaction then another. Maybe it would have started working if I took it longer, I dunno.

A good cleansing kit is acnefree. Similar to proactive except cheaper and you can get it in any drug store.

You should also consider Fish Oil pills(omega-3) and Biotin. That's what I take and my face looks good, no acne, no excess oil, good healthy coloring etc..
