I was in Kauai last week and as some of you may know, it's FULL of free roaming chickens.

I admit it, I talked to them. A lot. In stupid baby talk voice too.

Ms. sy, please tell us there was some alcohol involved.

Assuming there was, did you go for the traditional Mai Tais (as in plural) or what and what did your hubby indulge in?

And, did you just talk to the chickens or was there any petting or holding?

Can you provide any pics from your Hawaii trip and post on Corbito's vacation thread? With or without chickens is permissible.

Had there been alcohol involved, I wouldn't be embarrassed about it. No, I was stone cold sober. But they were really nice looking, colorful chickens.

And, did you just talk to the chickens or was there any petting or holding?

The chicks were so cute, but the roosters looked like they would take my eyes out at the first occasion. I was told later that most of the chickens on the island are descendents of fighting roosters, so no surprise they looked mean.

My grandma had free range chickens, she would let them out in the morning and call them back at night (and they came running! Heck my dog didn't come that fast when called!) so I would start doing my grandma's chicken call, and I don't want to think what other people thought of that. It's something like "chee chee che! Koh koh koh! Pee-oh pee-oh!" Yeah it sounds as dumb as it reads.

I admit that I can't stand country music.

ha ha wouldn't the world be a boring place if we all liked the same things.

I love country music

When I was much younger (mid 20s, in the army) I used to hate country music. Then a friend suckered me into going to a country bar/dance club (keep in mind this was ElPaso, Texas).

The first thing I remembered was when I turned around and accidentally smashed into a guy. I apologized, he said, “no problem” and we chatted a few minutes before going our way. I was amazed...if that was any other club, that guy would have punched me the second I bumped into him (ala Bodyhard). I couldn’t believe how friendly people were in this place, drunk and all.

The second thing was the dancing. The whole club had a big “race track” dance floor and everyone was doing the two-step, swinging, flipping, having a good time that wasn’t just random gyrations. I got a video and learned how to two-step the next day! Met LOTS of great people the next couple years, had real fun in a club that wasn’t centered (primarily) around drinking...got a taste for country music.

All distant memories now...but great times. Don’t really care for country music anymore, but every now and then I’ll be flipping through stations in the car and hear a song. Ain't it funny how a melody can bring back a memory (See what I did there...).

Love it. Fond memories like this should be bottled. No way do I believe for one minute you don't care for it anymore, that's okay - I won't tell anyone

I fell in love with country music when one day our neighbour had a big social gathering at their place. In fact they would have them a few times a year and without doubt were drunk as skunks early in the night. I was a kid then and always struggled to go to sleep, moreso when this stuff was blaring full throttle, it was absolutely marvelous to listen to. Every word heard, was such a delight for young ears. Bedtime stories from Glen Campbell, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers... great memories.

Have you ever thought about moving to Arkansas and entering the pig calling contests? There might be a learning curve but I bet you'd be good at it.

Seriously, the only thing I remember about Kauai are the chickens. They were everywhere.

Have you ever thought about moving to Arkansas and entering the pig calling contests? There might be a learning curve but I bet you'd be good at it.

Now that you mention it, we have been considering a change of place/career. I will give it serious thought.

She came from Seminara, which is in the Province of Reggio Calabria. She made a new life in Australia ~ late fifties, with many siblings arriving in the sixties. She married a farmer who was originally from a small town called Paisco in the province of Brescia. As you know in those days it was an odd match to see couples from the north and south get together, forced to communicate the best they could with their version of Italian since hardly anyone was lucky enough to go to school. Their dialects made it impossible lol My parents were the same but were a terrible match from the start and eventually divorced well into their senior years.

Wow they really were from the 2 ends of the country! And in those times the cultural differences were even greater than they are today. Not to mention, as you say, that plenty of people didn't know Italian, they only knew their own dialect, which is usually a completely different language from Italian, and can vary from place to place to the point that 2 neighboring cities can't understand each other.

For my first admission, I admit that I watch American Idol and I will bet tough guys like Karl and Bodyhard especially watch, as well. I just like to see musical talent. Music was one of my majors besides business/marketing. There were a few years I did not like American Idol because I thought they didn't have good talent, but this year is pretty good.
