Is there a way to develop your body to be tough?

So I'm asking in is there a way to make your body to be able to say take a punch? Any exercises, nutrition etc?
Of course it would be better if it could take more than just a punch.

Start building up and working the neck with wrestlers bridge. You can also buy a neck harness too.

First of all you’re thinking completely wrong. The best way to take a punch is to roll with the punches Which is something you’re never going to master. So the best thing for you is the avoid getting punched

Came here to say this, perhaps in a nicer way, but he's right. I guess ab and neck training would be useful too.

Yes. Just get strong. And eat a quality diet - don't ask what this is; you know already.

Ab training would help you take a blow to the gut, but remember that compounds like squats, standing presses, deadlifts, pullups/chinups work the abs heavily.

Neck training can help prevent concussions, but outside the context of competitive combat sports I don't recommend it unless you don't mind sleeping with a CPAP machine. Neck hypertrophy has been linked to the development of sleep apnea.

For a belly punch, you always have to brace.

Take boxing lessons. You'll learn how to block and avoid punches and failing to do so will give you some quality reps of learning how to take one.

Just spar and get use to it.
You will build up some tolerance getting use to it.
This part is a very mental thing.
All the physical training won't help if your mentally weak.
That being said work on your defensive skills for not getting hit.

Compounds do nothing to the abs compared to intense isolation work. But the sleep apnea and neck hypertrophy is very interesting.

I have to disagree with that statement, especially if you squat without a belt.

Nothing prepares you to be hit other than actual sparring. Farmers walks and all that other core stuff wont help until you actual learn how to get hit and keep moving.

Boxing, muay thai, or a good MMA or Krav Maga School (hint: if its run out of a crossfit box, it aint good) would all provide enlightenment.

Taking a punch and making the body tough were two different paragraphs. All the Martial Arts training in the world won't keep you standing if you're not braced for a belly punch.

You don't think heavy front squats and standing presses build brutally strong abs?

Not as much as weighted sit-ups, DOMS doesn't lie.

Some of my worst bouts of DOMS have come from kettlebell swings with a 16kg bell. Do you think my hamstrings are going to get brutally strong from those, or do you think heavy deadlifts would be better?

Also, I'd recommend crunches over sit-ups. Either standing with cable or regular on the floor.

You have a great point, although I still think abs thrive on isolations, they do more work. Crunches are more aesthetic for sure, they don't blow up the gut and waist as much.

I do direct ab work daily because I believe direct work is necessary for optimal ab strength, but I still believe people can develop reasonable abs through the basic compound lifts.

We're not looking for "reasonable" though are we.

I think people can probably develop abs to ~90% of their potential through heavy compound lifts, and the last 10% can be achieved through direct work. This is just my belief though.

Yeah man, I think doing compounds only blow the abs out a lot too, all that abdominal pressure is working basically to give people a big gut lol. Gotta do the isolation work to tighten things back up.
I'll rep you when I'm recharged.

But go ahead and do farmers walks if you think that will help you take a punch.

Toughness is more about your mind than your body. You can almost always do more than you think you can. High reps and static holds will make you tougher. You have to suffer to be ready to suffer. Focus on endurance training. And you'll have to get punched to learn how to take one.

If you want to be "tougher," you have to put your mind and body through some kind of adversity on a continual basis....That could be physical "obstacles" (tendonitis...still trainable in some instances; pushing past failure as much as possible, etc.) or mental (managing hereditary panic attacks while training; motivational issues, etc.). Strength training, powerlifting, training in an "explosive" manner (think how athletes train) will always help. Then you could put that strength and conditioning foundation into Muay Thai, learning self-defense techniques, and various MMA disciplines if you truly want to "develop a tougher mind and body."

Start by picking a good strength based program, eat to support your nutritional and training needs, get restorative sleep and join one of the many MMA classes available now....

Endurance training will make your build your "mental fortitude," so to speak. But training for power will build efficient self defense skills.....

I thought I made it clear that taking a punch and toughening the body were separate points.
