I eat chickens, cows, and pigs & I have a question for others who eat chickens etc

What is it about dogs and cats that keeps you from eating them the way you eat cows, chickens, or pigs?
I personally can't really answer this question for myself if I really think about it.

I've eaten both overseas. Dog was unwillingly, wasn't aware until after I ate. Cat, I hate cats so I didn't care.

Dog was kind of a cross between beef and lamb, I didn't chew on it much longer than that. Wouldn't recommend it.

Cat is kind of like pork maybe. It was good with BBQ sauce. The best was the teriyaki cat on skewers.

Both dogs and cats are the absolute earliest forms of domestication. They arose out of those two animals CHOOSING to live proximal to humans of their own accord. Cats and dogs have not only demonstrated a willingness to endear themselves with humans, but have proven to be extremely utilitarian.

Part of me thinks the intelligence of the animal plays a part, which is why I don't understand why we eat pork.

Why not humans is simple. Humans are animals only in a biological sense. Obviously, human beings are on a completely different level than animals, including primates, widely accepted in just about any existing culture today. How certain animals have been bread and what characteristics have been assigned to them is not an objective measure of their worth and whether it is ethically OK to kill them. For me, no animal is only meat, just as no plant is only food. Still we have to eat.

The actual reason we are not cannibals is because if we ate human tissue, holes would form in the brain and become stark raving mad before we died.

While it may seem initially disturbing, I think it's a valid question - I agree that social and behavioral norms developed over history are the reasons we eat farm animals but not domestic ones.

If anything - the arguments works the other way for me - when I think about how similar farm animals are to domestic ones, it makes me feel guilty for eating the cows, not curious why I'm not eating dogs...

Its pretty simple if you stop and think about it. Animals such as dogs and cats are carnivores. The meat doesn't taste as good. That goes for most, if not all carnivores.

Yea, that’s my best guess as to why I couldn’t eat dog or cat meat, but other cultures do. Maybe they view all animals as fair game to eat.

In some parts of Italy they ate cats until fairly recently. We also eat horse and donkey. It all comes down to what you were told as a child was proper to eat or not.

They outlawed it for human consumption in Oregon shortly thereafter. It's been legalized again recently, but there's not much of a market for it any more, so nobody sells it.

In Italy the website of Avis (Italian association of blood donors) openly and explicitly recommends blood donors to eat horse meat because it's so rich in iron. As a kid I remember being told that if you went to donate blood they'd give you a piece of horse meat to take home, but not sure if it was a urban legend.
