The subjects were 15 male and 7 female well-trained handball players recruited from National Taiwan University of Sport, Taichung, Taiwan. All subjects have competed at the national or international level. The characteristics of subjects are shown in Table 1. The subjects were free of known cardiovascular disease risks and musculoskeletal injuries. The subjects had not taken any protein supplement for at least 3 months prior to the study. The regular training schedule and diet habits were maintained during the study period, except on the day before each trial when all training was avoided and standardized meals were provided. All subjects gave their written informed consent after the experimental procedure and potential risks were explained. The study protocol was approved by the Human Subject Committee of National Taiwan University of Sport.

"This study showed that BCAA and arginine supplementation could improve performance in intermittent sprints on the second consecutive day of simulated handball games in well-trained athletes by potentially alleviating central fatigue."
Let's say I decide to start playing handball, pick it up rather quickly and then find myself playing in an international tournament and my match on day one is where I really need the boost. This combination will be of no help and my dream of being a world renowned handball champion could very well be crushed.
No thanks.Last edited by BogusForLife; 01-24-2019 at 10:43 AM.

BCAA formulas are typically a 2:1:1 ratio of leucine:isoleucine:valine. Caloric value of this mix in this proportion is 6.38 cals per gram (leucine & isoleucine each have 6.52 cal/g, valine has 5.96 cal/g). So, 15g of BCAAs = 96 kcal.
Why not go with a 20-25 g dose of whey for the same amount of calories? You'd be getting the rest of the essential amino acids plus other anabolic/anticatabolic co-factors, pro-immune factors, etc.
You'd also be hitting the acute dosing ceiling for muscle protein synthesis. It would also cost less money, and you'd actually be getting a stronger anabolic response - not to mention a greater thermic effect than you'd get from isolated BCAAs due to the higher energetic "cost" of processing.
It literally makes no sense to take 15 g BCAA instead of its caloric equivalent in whey.
