"A Noble prize-winning scientist has been stripped of his honorary titles at a lab after doubling down on his 'reprehensible' views on intelligence and race. James Watson, 90, who shared a 1962 Nobel Prize for discovering that DNA was a double helix, lost his job in 2007 for expressing racist views. On Friday January 11 he was stripped of several honorary titles by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, in New York, which he once headed.

Watson said his views about intelligence and race had not changed since 2007, when he told a magazine that he was 'inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa' because 'all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours - where all the testing says not really.'

In the 2007 interview, Watson said that while he hopes everyone is equal, 'people who have to deal with black employees find this is not true.'

In this month's documentary, he said genes cause a difference on average between black people and white people on IQ tests."

I don't think its racist at all the say the average IQ of one race is naturally lower than the IQ of another, its racist to say this person is smarter than the other based solely on race. I think he would also agree that blacks are naturally more athletic, we say this all the time but somehow its not racist because people are not offended by it

It's insecurity.
To be fair those IQ test can be a hit or miss. Some people are great test takers and yet are "dumb" as rocks.. Went to school with lots of people like that. Failed the quizzes and homework, but can score 100 multiple choice final exam without studying. One of my old roommates took one of those IQ test when she was younger and scored in the top 1%, yet she was working at a hardware store. I wouldn't take it 100% seriously.

IQ is not a valid test of how smart someone is though because it's culturally influenced. Even the language you speak can influence how smart you are (sapir whorf hypothesis). If you raise 100 black babies and 100 white babies and 100 asian babies in the exact same environment, there will be no intelligence difference between the groups. I do believe that certain cultures are simply inferior and people raised in those cultures will be, on average, less intelligent than people raised in other cultures, but there is no genetic factor.

We do raise black, white and Asian babies in the same circumstance. It;s called sot western countries.

I haven't looked into this in depth, but I've looked into it a bit...

What I discovered used to bother me, but I've come to accept that there are average IQ differences between races. Why there is a difference is disputed, people like Charles Murray (to my knowledge) have said that they he can't make a conclusive case that the difference is primarily genetic or environmental, whereas other people believe it is genetic.

Watson sounds like an IQ determinist though, with his views regarding Africa.

IQ determinism is on shaky grounds. There are other factors that can predict a propensity for violence, substance addiction, etc (eg. The A.C.E. test, James Gilligan's research into the psychology of violent people, etc,).

Also, China was largely in poverty prior to the economic reformations of the 70s, and many Gulf states are in the top ten GDP per capita, despite the Arab race having an IQ similiar to Subsaharan Africans and Hispanics.

China and the Gulf States show that socio-economic systems, and state management competence, does matter when it comes to economic development - unlike what Watson thinks.

The reason for African underdevelopment is multifaceted. There is a level of corruption in the state, economic organizations, and Charities (that I've began to learn) which is mind blowing. (Another problem, is that African nations are often so resource rich that the state workers don't have to rely on Tax revenue for income, they can just rely on Business deals. Which means they have no economic incentives for improving the conditions of the average person. So if they aren't decent people to begin with, little goes to the people.)

agree. and doesn't even have to be about race.

Just limit a study within racial groups and you will find different aptitudes and intelligence. Doesn't have to be racist. When it first occurred to me that there was an inherent level or predisposition for intelligence was observing babies at a daycare. It was night and day between the dumb babies and the others.

Traits can be bred in dogs (from personal experience) and other animals. We aren't different.

Intelligence also doesn't equal wealth or success. In certain societal environments, you would want to keep intelligence low key.

Certain environments may have hindered the fitness of intelligence while others would allow it to flourish.

IF Africa as a whole has less intelligence, then I would look to what evolutionary pressures caused that. Then I would find pockets (because they will exist) of where intelligence is thriving and study those pressures.
