The amount of emphasis someone puts on the concept of IQ is inversely proportional to their actual intellect. (Sorry misc, I know how much IQ is worshipped on here).

On a different note, the medical field of psychiatry is very much wanting in terms of rigorous scientific understanding. It is amazing how much of the field is on uncertain footing.

Well your GP is not following the recommended guidelines. Any good GP would trial lifestyle interventions -> Pharmacological therapy -> referral to a psych. Yes there is over-prescription but put yourself in the Drs shoes. We're not trained to weed out liars, we take what people tell us at face value as the truth and if you don't prescribe then you run the risk that the persons depression might spiral out -> suicide or their anxiety worsens and they lose their job.

By the sounds of it even you'd admit there are plenty of people out there who don't need the meds but tell their GP what it takes to get them. For sure there are those out there who are depressed due to chemical imbalances and thus require pills but I'd wager the genuine amount of these people is higher than you'd care to admit. If I had a penny for every person I'd met on anti-depressants who'd tried absolutely nothing prior to getting on the pills (though, granted, they no doubt tell their GP otherwise).

Again, no doubt all these people tell their GPs otherwise and the GPs have little choice but to take their word for it (or maybe many believe they have actually attempted to help themselves even though they've done nothing) but the western world is absolutely teeming with them, hence depression/suicide is largely restricted to not only our societies as opposed to the third world but specifically it is a middle to upper class phenomenon. I would guess that's because having actual problems makes you less neurotic.

Agreed. You only have to look at the method in which conditions are classified/defined by symptoms in the first place to reach this conclusion. It's not much more than a group of academics getting together and going "yeah, sounds about right, let's just go with that" srs.

College isn't essential for success in life.

I still plan on pursuing a 2 year technical degree. However I get tired of these people who spent thousands of dollars in college only to make an 50k or 60k, and cope by trying to convince me I can't be successful unless I pile myself in debt and get a job in a barely relevant field like them. I wasted so much money on college because it was hammered in my head, like most people in the 90s and early 2000s, that "you just need to get a degree no matter what it is."

It worked out for me because I got a job that just required a 4 year degree but I was not mature enough fully appreciate everything and had zero clue what I wanted to do with my life.
