Young money math skills of peace

LOL we’ve discussed this in general here before...

...but today I went to the movies. I was at the concession stand and the total came to $11.97. I handed the guy $22. He looks at me and says “sir, its only $11.97” and hands me back my 2 one dollar bills. I instantly realized he was money math retarded because most kids are these days, so I simply said “oh thank you.” I didn’t bother arguing with him, particularly since I was with a chick who probably couldn’t do the math either. LOL

    Kids these days...amirite?

The more surprising news here is that... you use cash? I thought that was pretty much a thing of the past. I use cash probably less than once a year these days. At least in the US. They still use it more in other countries, so it's a little different when traveling.

I would have told you that I don't have change and I can only credit your card and that will take about 7 banking days and that service will cost you $5, so the credit will be for $5.03

A friend and I just bought an item between us, at the cash I told the cashier we wanted to pay half each on debit. She gave me a blank stare, I aid what? we can't do this. Yes she said, I just don't have a calculator. I just about $hit, the item was $299.00 tax exempt. I'm like really? It's $149.50 each, She looked at me and said, I know, I'll use my phone, she whips out her phone calculates it looks at and said. You're good.

Kids aren’t (in large part) taught and forced to master the basics before they move to the next level. I know adults (many) that cannot do basic math computations, such as fractions and percentages.

Trust me, I wish it were only todays kids. It’s not.

I always marvel at adults who ask when they will use the stuff they learned in school.

Obvious answer: many of you won’t learn it, nor be able to use it.

Younger Cashiers can't do math but in time they learn, or they cheat by using the Till to do the math for the amount given with the Tender button. It is kind of sad to see a life skill regulated to a machine, but such is technology. The best is getting an old school Cashier who keeps the Till open and watches your hands with their hands in the Till counting out change as soon as you touch your first bill, by the time you are handing them the bills and coins they are handing you your change in the other hand. Open Tills today, haha hardly.

In teaching my kids how to go to the store to buy things I've always shown them to count up from the amount they are told the item costs to the closest amount of cash they have, I mention it not to brag but because on more than a few occasions they've started to go at it with cashiers about the difference back they should get and from my vantage of standing in the doorway or a few paces back it's absolutely hilarious. Next life lesson to them is to not be a smartass. :\

I had some items total something like $10.01. I handed the cashier a $20 bill and reached into my pocket for a penny. When I handed the penny to the cashier, she told me it was too late to do that as she had already input $20 into the register. She handed me my $9.99 change. I put the 99 cents directly onto the counter, threw the penny in with the change and asked for a dollar bill. Sounds easy enough but the cashier took the time to count all of the change. You're the one who counted out 99 cents, lady, why do you have to count it all again when all I did was add a penny to the pile?

One more tip for younger cashiers. When giving change, put the coins in my hand first and then the bills on top. That way I can simply close my hand and put the change in my pocket. When you put the bills in my hand first, I have to do that tricky thing where I gently slide the bills out from under the change and risk having some of the loose change on top of the bill falling everywhere. This was never a problem with the old fashioned way of counting change as the coins were always counted out first.

OMG!!! So much this. ^^^^ Coins on top of bills drives me nuts.

And what is it with businesses today? Do they not keep 10 dollar bills in the drawer anymore? I get two 5s in change almost every time. It's kind of an insult to Alexander Hamilton don't ya think?

You're the one who counted out 99 cents, lady, why do you have to count it all again when all I did was add a penny to the pile?
    This is hilarious!
There will come a day when I tire of listening to 80's music. That day is not today.

Awesome....but another way to do this would be to just throw the 99 cents at her and walk out! I hate coins in my pocket...
