OP: Everyone has different answers to this question. I bought my wife's ring when I was on a poverty college budget, but still spent about $1400. My brother recently got married and (based on the size of her ring) likely spent about 3-4k. My wife is fine with her ring because of the emotional connection/value associated with it, not the pricetag.
