Does this guy work for the gym or is he just one of those guys that offers to "train" every good looking female that walks through the door? We have two or three of those at our gym. When me and my wife started going to the gym we are at now she got hassled a few times by them. She let it be known up front she wasn't interested and started wearing ear buds so they wouldn't approach her while she was there.

If your wife hasn't shut this guy down she may be enjoying the attention; which is gonna lead to some problems for sure.

No, it is not appropriate for the trainer to be rubbing his hands all over your wife every time she goes to the gym. Occasionally assisting with stretches is one thing, but constantly touching her is over the line of acceptable.

Any male trainer I have seen training women limits touching to an occasional correction of form, basically. A light touch of correction and then done. Or the trainer will demonstrate the proper form and not touch them at all.

That trainer is getting unnecessarily handsy, and your wife should consider using a different trainer altogether.

I can't speak for every gym, but ours have both male and female trainers on staff. I've always seen the female clients with the female trainer.

She spoke to her friends about this - and their consensus was that I was over-reacting.

Assisted stretches are normal for a PT, just like how a yoga instructor and a physiotherapist can handle their client.

She is also saying her mother has a male yoga instructor - so gender doesn’t matter in the fitness field.

She also brought up the fact that there are cameras all around the gym - if he was inappropriate it would have been caught in footage, as such, he wasn’t doing anything wrong.

Well unless he is trying to rope her in 'for free' then offer her real training if she pays that is not to out of the ordinary. But everything aside if you have a problem with what the trainer is doing, simply pull him aside and tell him you have a problem with it AND that your wife has expressed she is uncomfortable with it simple. But in the event that your wife doesn't really see a problem with it(which I am assuming she doesn't), then that is something you both will have to talk about and deal with.

Though I will say this OP, I do find it funny your wife is more concerned about the consensus of her friends rather than her husbands.
