My friend Yanosh says that the average male in his 20s can bench 185 lbs for reps.
Is it true?

I consider it an abomination if a man is his 20s cannot rep out 315 without having stepped foot in a gym before.
I consider it an atrocity to socialised civilization, you may as well be a girl if you cannot rep out 315 for reps and you're in your 20s NO EXCEPTIONS.Last edited by Diabolous; 01-27-2018 at 06:51 PM.

Gonna have to say no in regards to "repping" it out unless they are very high in bodyweight and do the occasional pushups here and there inbetween their tradie runs & possibly have an athletic background. Even so I would expect only 1-3 reps out of them MAX. To truly rep it out with ease? nah, gotta train for a few months for that IMO.
I think of the average male and I look at my dad, and there is no way he'd be benching anywhere NEAR 135 let alone 185.
If the dude's a big framed guy and a literal giant (not in a muscular way) then 185 might be possible.Last edited by MichaelDuong; 01-27-2018 at 04:46 PM.

I rarely see anyone with more than 135 on the bar. Even then I doubt theyre doing 3x10 either.
Sometimes I see people half rep a little more. Or people will load up 225 and hit it once or twice and drop back down. lol.
What I do see a lot of is people who put a 35 and a 25 on each side.... looks like more than a 45 and a 10.
Theres never any programming or clear progression either. It seems like every guy who benches just tries to figure out how much they can bench that day and then stops when their shoulder hurts.

135 would be more likely. The average man can't touch 185

****ing nope
It's an amazing phenomenon. Nonlifters are unaware of how strong the average consistent gym goer is compared to the general population. Lifters are also unaware of it quite often, maybe they forgot, maybe they are simply naturally strong and so they overestimate the average person.
I introduced a friend of mine to the gym. He was 5'11, maybe 190lb, not visibly fat, not muscular, just a big frame. He could not bench 135lb his first day. He responded fast as **** though.
Regular consistent gym goers are practically superhuman compared to the average population. I'd say they the average male goes to the gym occasionally. That makes them practically a nonlifter. I'd be surprised if the average male is repping more than 135.No Negs Crew
I do not neg other posters. If I would deem your post a poor one, you have already punished yourself by writing it.

Not even close... I would be surprised if average max is even 135.

Trying to get your ideal outcome often leads to the passing up of practical alternatives that deny your adversaries theirs.

Cool.
Yeah, it's pretty good if you started with 3x5 135 lbs.
BTW, here's a dedicated thread for BF% estimates, if you ever get interested: https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showt...620211&page=94
