Plenty old timers around who need this kind of surgery due to genetic degenerative disease. Ronnie probably simply accelerated the natural deterioration by a couple of years. Given what he achieved, I'm sure he doesn't have any regrets.

They take intestines out and operate from the anterior side of spine by adding rods and whatever else needed to stabilize spinal vertebrae and probably the disks too. Spinal surgery when entering from the front leads to far shorter recovery periods needed versus cutting through the complex network of muscles in the back which would lay him up for weeks. Obviously once done they put the intestines back in(although his are so enlarged he probably would appreciate if they removed half of them).
