Question Pendlay row or Barbell row for upper back?

I have always done barbell overhand rows for my back, and now i really start to see that my lats is overpowering my back and that my upper back and traps are weak.

Does pendlay row works the upper back more?

If done properly yes. Your arms should not be close to the body. They should be away from the body like when you bench press. elbows at 45 degrees or so and bar pulled to the chest

It depends on the specific form you're using. Most people tend to be more upright with a barbell row vs. pendlay row. This generally means it will work more upper back.

This. Also, you will typically be able to move more weight with a barbell row, making it better suited to hypertrophy, while Pendlays may be better suited to developing power/speed.

The wider your grip on the bar, and the higher you pull to your torso (i.e., pull to the chest), the more you work upper back (traps, teres, rhomboids, rear delts). Pendlay rows put you in this position, so there is less lat engagement than with barbell rows. With barbell rows, the tendency is to pull into your abs, which engages lats more, even though your torso angle is more upright.

Guys, a pendlay row is a bent over barbell row.

I think everyone is trying to explain the difference between a Pendlay/Barbell row with back parallel to the floor, and a Barbell row with torso angled up, and explain how the different postures target different muscles in the back. OP asked about upper back, so we started splitting hairs.

A pendlay row is a barbell row starting from the floor at every rep.

The bodybuilding barbell row looks like this: https://www.bodybuilding.com/exercis...er-barbell-row

What are your other back exercises? Pull ups?

    What program are you on?

You probably shouldn't be designing your own program.

why not include them both, OR cycle the two exercises from time to time.

pendlay row emphasizes more upper back.

Do rack pulls for upper back
    Weighted pullups = 195 lbs x1
    Weighted dips = 225 lbs x2

90 degree back angle and 90 degree elbow flare, the less your angle on both of these the more lats you will hit.

I could see more weight with a Yates rows due to the angle, but I'm having trouble seeing how you'd do more on a controlled exercise like barbell rows than a dynamic one like Pendlay rows.

why not include them both, OR cycle the two exercises from time to time.
Pretty much. The movements are very interchangeable. I really like both variations for assisting my log press in the offseason for Strongman.
    550/385/655, 285 overhead press, 330 push jerk, 250 weighted dip, 190 weighted pull-up, 413.8 max weighted pull-up, 450 front squat, 365 RFESS, 305 x 2 log press, 400 (per arm) farmer's carry, 370 atlas stone, 31 pull-ups at 247.

Traps contribute more to the movement due to the torso angle, hence the higher weight on BORs for most people. A little momentum is acceptable on BORs as well.

Rack pulls work the traps isometrically in the same way that a deadlift does, but with heavier loads due to shorter ROM.

Be more specific about the type of bent over row you want to do...include a video or picture. There is only one way to do a pendlay, but there are a dozen ways to do a bent over row.

Pendlays are just a specific type of bent over row.

It would but if that's your program it's probably a very suboptimal program.

Like I mentioned earlier, the type of questions you're asking suggest that you shouldn't be designing your own program.

Any row that has you pull high to the chest. For example a seated row with the seat in a low position, like this: https://www.rehabmart.com/imagesfrom...dRowFemale.jpg
