I worked retail for many years beginning in the mid-seventies and always said "Have a great holiday!" rarely knowing in advance the religious beliefs of my customers. If they said "Merry Christmas" or whatever, I'd return the greeting in kind, but you learn, or should, that's it's ignorant to assume anything about someone.

Side note, don't work retail unless you want to learn the truth about Christmas in America. I say it that way because I don't know what it's like anywhere else, but here, it's about consumerism and obligatory gift giving, and more recently it's also a political football.

That's right, at one time there was no historical record of anything. So what? Christmas is but one Winter Solstice holiday that people celebrate. Some came before Christmas and some came after. The US embraces religious diversity by making religious freedom one of our cornerstones, but American Christians more than anyone are offended by the presence of "competing" religious holidays, and for the last decade or so have been shrieking about a non-existent "war on Christmas" simply because there are other Americans who show respect for all religions by not assuming everyone is Christian.

If anything, you should be offended by what consumerism has done to your holiday. The real message of Christmas has been replaced by something far worse than "happy holiday".

Kwanzaa was a made up holiday meant for a group of people to go against the grain by not celebrating christmas, but who wanted to have a holiday too. Holidays are often old religious symbols, not something we make up to feel included bc we don't like that other guys holiday.
