At first I though this was another long-winded joke thread....then I see all this mess of replies and can't help feeling left out on why OP is insulted.
In my neck of the woods, $5 would buy me lunch....
So in return for retrieving this helpless potato's briefcase, this guy bought me a free lunch.
Where's the insult?

I remember when me and my wife honeymooned in Vegas. We had two huge bags because we were moving in addition to honeymooning. I took these big bags plus all of the smaller, misc bags like a pack mule down from the 34th floor, across the casino and across the driveway to get to the taxi to take us to the airport. It wasn't super hard but hard enough that it wasn't pleasant. The guy opens up the back of the van to put our luggage in. I sit the bags down and as I'm picking the bag back up he grabs the bag from me and throws it in the back. Then as I went for the other bag he did the same thing. The next few seconds were awkward, because he was standing there waiting for a tip. There's no fukn way I'm going to give you a tip when I did all of the damn work to get the bags to your van. At the beginning of the trip I tipped the guy who brought our bags up to the room $10. When we got into the taxi you could see his jimmies were rustled that I didn't tip him.

An ex boss of mine always reminds me of this story. We were doing a job in Westchester County and on the way to my truck this guy stops me and asks if I had jumper cables. I tell him I do and he points to his car. My truck was an o;d Datsun pickup, i beat the **** out of it but it ran great. I drive over to his car and pop the hood and I start to hook up the cables. The guy looks at me and says damn your battery"s worse than mine. I unhooked the cables and just grunted at him, "ugh my car starts" Got into my truck and drove away with my boss. Boss looks at me and asks what happened. Told him, he insulted my truck and I just told him my car starts, **** him. Twenty five years later boss is still laughing.

I dunno.....for me, intent is everything. If he meant it as a nice gesture, even if somewhat insulting, I wouldn't take offense to it.
And, $5 is nothing to sneeze at. Probably took you about 30 seconds, which translated into an hourly wage would be $600 per hour, which if you did this for a living would give you an annual salary of more than 1.2 million! Not bad!
It could have been worse....he could have said "thanks bro, I'll give you some greens in bb.com".It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
