All that--backwards mounts, mount on front rail, no eye relief--plus those aren't quick release scope mounts, so the BUIS is useless and just in the way.

If I was going for affordable variable power optic I would look hard at Vortex and Primary arms.

I've bought a grand total of two centerfire rifle scopes for two completely differently purposed rifles and am in the process of buying a third while conducting initial research on a fourth. There are folks out there with a lot more experience in this arena than I do ITT, but I've found this basic advice helpful.
Step One: Identify Magnification Range You Want
Step Two: Identify Desired Reticle/Illumination
Step Three: Identify Desired Focal Plane
Step Four: Identify Desired Size Characteristics (Tube Size, Objective Size, Weight)
Right off the bat, the Nikon has exposed turrets and a BDC reticle, which doesn't make any sense. Neither one has a parallax adjustment, and the tubes on these are both one inch. The Nikon is also about 3 oz heavier. You're going to spend $50-80 on a cantilevered scope mount (non-QD) to make it usable.
If you're going to completely cheap out, this scope has the same mag range, is about as heavy as the Nikon, and costs half as much: http://www.primaryarms.com/pa3-9x44sfp
If you're willing to accept the extra weight, this one has significantly more features at a lower price point than either of the ones you posted: http://www.primaryarms.com/primary-a...ly-2016-pa416x

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Now I'm not questioning you guys, I just kinda want to know why things are how they are:
-Isn't **-**x40 > **-**x24 ?
Is it just brand/build quality? What about the specs?
Thanks Ike.
I'm not looking to cheap out. But this is just going to be budget scope for fun at the range and taking shots no more than 100yards ussually.
I am willing to spend a bit more than $200. Its just what I was originally looking at that landed me at that price range. Are you not entertained?

I like the primary arms FFP 4-14x44 w/ parallax adj. and a 30mm tube for $230. Really a great scope at that price mark.

The larger obj lens allows more light transmission. Really helpful at max power, or during dawn/dusk lighting.I'm not blessed with riches, but I am rich with blessings.
Thank you, LORD, my God.

A 24mm objective lens is not necessarily worse than a 40mm objective lens. It 100% depends on the glass. The size of the objective lens determines how much light comes into the scope, which is then transmitted to your eye. An extremely clear lens (Trijicon) will allow for better/equal light transmission, even with a smaller objective compared to a ****tier lens.
You have to have an understanding of how optics "gather" light and how you experience color to understand how/why this makes sense. Everything that you see is a reflection of light from a source (i.e., the sun, a flashlight, the moon, stars) or a source itself (the computer screen you're looking at emits light, for example). When you look through a scope, you're seeing light from the sun bounce off the object you're aiming at, which is hitting every point on the objective lens on the scope at the same time, which is then being refracted inside the scope towards the ocular lens where it is focused onto your eyeball so that you can see it.
Very clear glass requires fewer "copies" of the image for a clear transmission of that image, which is why a scope with "good glass" or a scope used to shoot an object that is not very far away can get away with a 24mm objective. Likewise, this is why very expensive scopes used for long range and low-light will have very large objective lenses (50mm, even 56mm). Good glass is generally more expensive, especially if it is not an overly heavy scope.

If what you want to do is shoot small groups for fun on targets that are almost always going to be at 100 yds, skip the BDC reticle. The entire point of getting a BDC reticle is to be able to take quick shots at targets of varying extended distances, and, on the better ones, to help you quickly range your target using the subtensions.

I shot my 4x out to 600 yds earlier this year. While it is definitely far, for my first time doing it it was not absurdly difficult. At 300 yds, shooting with a 4x is pretty easy, and that's with the Triangle reticle on an Accupoint.
I'd recommend a milling reticle or an MOA reticle with subtensions for what he's doing every time.
The rifle I'm doing the researching for is the wife's 18" SPR build, so I'm torn between something like a 1-8 BDC or something more like a 2-10 TMR that I have on my M14.

Any of you guys paintball? I went for the first time last week and it was insanely fun. Seems like a decent way to get some realistic training. Very surprised at how realistic and tiring it was.

On another note, I've been trying to condense LTC Grossman's book "On Killing" into a class/talk/presentation for my soldiers as we begin preparing for deployment. Hell of a lot of info to try and condense.
