IB's (and Django Unchained) are entertaining but silly, over the top, self-indulgent fantasy fests - which are ultimately ex disrespectful to the people who actually died & suffered in those contexts.

Agreed, especially Inglorious Bastards made feel uncomfortable at times. Problem is Tarantino, while a movie buff, does not really seem to be that knowledgable about history.

Main person I watch IB's for is Daniel Brul (he played the German war hero) who is a crackin little actor. (He's also in 'Rush' playing Nicki Lauder).

He portraied his Audie Murphy-character really well.

Didn't know character was based on a real person, though should have guessed. He's just such a great little actor, good in anything he's in .. enviable grasp of different languages too (got a bit of crush on him lol, female - no homo).

Heard of Goodbye Lenin way back, but have never seen it .. will give it a watch thks.

My impression of Italians in Italy so far has been - family is all important, outside that it's "phuck y'all' ... but there's a pretence of civility to others because it's necessary to make money.

I find many oscar-bait/oscar winning/'serious' movies to be over-rated. They're all so 'deep', except they're not.

If you wan to see an accurate portrayal of the mafia The Sopranos comes the closest.

Sure, but no more so than any other culture, of course if you went to holiday in a small village it may have seemed more pronounced because in small villages everyone literally knows everybody and you have literally been the outsider.

Small holiday place outside Sorrento yeah, but didn't find it any different in larger places visited like Rome (suppose big cities/capital cities are never gonna be friendly anyway!).

They just seemed v exploitative of visitors/tourists at every turn and like they looked down on them, see them as lambs to be fleeced, an inconvenience etc. .. but I suppose Italy has one of the longest experiences of tourism & that could be a factor.

Will always have fond memories tho cause popped my cherry there (well, tried to) ... was up for it and the deciding factor was when the dude braked suddenly to avoid hitting a hedgehog on the road; I thought; "yeah, he's quality" lol

Prefer countryside and little places over cities anyway so tiny place outside Sorrento was cool (Massalubrense/Marina della Lobra).
