I have the Ruger 556 and it is fuking awesome! I got it for $599 at Cabelas. Unless you're a rich operator wannabe the Ruger is MORE than enough to learn and have fun with.
The S&W Sport is a POS IMO because of the slight gap between the upper and lower. There is a lot of play there which was in all three that I handled. The tolerance and solid feel of the Ruger is what made me decide on my budget AR. In fact I wouldn't mind getting another just because it's such a solid rifle.

So far 243. First with 30+1 and then another mag with 30 right after most of the time. And as I mentioned to you a while a go it did have one jam with the very first mag I put in it. It could have been operator error, new mag issue or a fluke. Or maybe it just sat around for a while. But like I mentioned a week ago, single shot, double tap and rapid fire are working perfectly right now.
And of course the upper/lower fit isn't my only criteria BUT it helped with my choice of a BUDGET AR or what I could afford to get at the moment. That's sloppy craftsmanship by S&W to let their rifles go out in such a condition IMO. I didn't go in blind, I watched and read a lot of reviews and learned what I could. For my needs, home defense and a bit of backyard shooting, not really long distance or being an operator I found it to be a great fit Farley. I really don't understand all the hate toward the Ruger. Hickok and many others find it to be a great rifle. The S&W hate I can roll with because it just seemed flakey but the Ruger really felt solid.
I get it that it's nice to have all the bells and whistles on an AR. Trigger, best barrel, etc but unless you plan to be a marksman with it, just get something that fits your needs. These can be modded later down the road with new furniture, trigger etc.

Upper/lower fit isn't a big deal and plenty of rifles have some play there.
243 rounds through it and it's had a failure? I'd be putting a lot more rounds through it to verify reliability before trusting it (no matter what it was)
This isn't about bells and whistles. Bells and whistles would be a gunfighter grip, ambi charging handle with a big latch, mounted weapon light, optic, sling, ambi safety/selector, foregrip of choice, upgraded/fancy muzzle device, free float rail...

I hear you Farley. Srs. Thing is though with the AR's you guys recommend can you guarantee that there would be no jams, ever.
I know it's about buying something you want to trust your life over but here is a scenario...
$600 Ruger 556 has 1000 rounds through it with one jam while firing the first ever mag. $1000 AR has 1000 rounds through it jam free.
The day comes when you have to use it in a self defense situation. The Ruger 556 fires it's 1001th round and kills the intruder, while the $1000 AR jams on it's 1001th round resulting in said owner being killed.
You could put 10,000 rounds through something but wouldn't there always be that "chance" on the next round?

What are you talking about? Nobody said or implied anything about guaranteeing there would be no jams, ever.
I did say that if I had a new gun with a mere 243 rounds through it and it had a malfunction, I would shoot it a lot more to verify reliability before trusting it for defensive use, no matter what it was.
All experienced shooters know that if you shoot a gun, any gun, long enough, you will eventually have a malfunction. Even if the malfunction can be attributed to ammo or a magazine, eventually, it's going to happen.
Let's start with the Ruger has 1,000 rounds through it part, get that out of the way, and go from there.

Ok, well instead of just saying these rifles are LOL worthy. Can you guys explain your thoughts on them. Why isn't it worth the $600. What could be better that would actually aid the person buying it to have a better experience. Isn't it more so the shooter than the equipment? Just because I or anyone else buys up what you guys recommend doesn't mean my accuracy will be any better with it.
And yes at the time I figured a tighter fit meant better quality. Guess I was wrong?

lol well I have nothing to hide. I will for sure keep updating when I get to fire it off. You think it's going to blow up at 999 rounds haha?
Ok then as I asked Kik, what about the Ruger or even Sport is LOL worthy? They are frowned upon so much but no thoughts are ever shared by you guys. I know Ike doesn't think to highly of them either.
I'm here to learn for sure. You guys know this chit through and through and it's cool AF reading all the knowledgeable posts about this stuff. Srs.

The Ruger has proprietary parts, an inferior gas system, and a BCG that's had issues with the Bolt not being machined properly, causing it to seize in the chamber. Also, I believe they made their barrel out of 4140 steel (poverty). Not as bad as the Sport II (4140 AND 1:9), but these guns are both terrible. The AR market is too good for people to be buying these poverty cannons.

I'm sure the Ruger will be fine for you.
This thread tends to attract a lot of gear snobs... guys who go on and on about the best specs and whiz bang gadgets and then get outshot all day by guys with "poverty rifles" who keep it simple and just work on mastering the basics.http://youtube.com/user/Kiknskreem
