So my car's breaking down, it's like 17 years old, and my dad basically took my nissan frontier that he got me as my first car and gave me this old car knowing it's about to break bc both are in his name. Well flash forward to a year and a half later and my car can't go on anymore, he's already sunk thousands into repairs and it's not worth it anymore.
The other day he said he's getting me a car, I said ok cool the only thing i'd really like is 4 doors so i can drive for uber, as well as the ability to drive on dirt roads. So he picks a car and won't tell me what it is "bc it's a surprise" it's a 19,000$ Subaru which he shows me at the dealership and i drive it around. He then tells me on the spot that I have to pay 3000$ as well as pay 170$ a month loan after I graduate (may 2018) for 3 whole years.
I said i didn't want to be trapped paying monthly and if we could please look at other cars that are cheaper bc it wouldn't make a difference to what he's paying but it'd make it so i dont have to pay. He fuking freaks out and leaves the dealership and says I have to take out my own loan and buy my own car when I go to school full time, volunteer every week, and work part time hosting. I'm already working my ass off and even though it makes no fuking difference to what he pays, he WANTS to get me an expensive subaru so I have to shell out thousands of dollars.
Idk what to do if you guys could lmk if it's possible to get a good car for less than 19,000$ bc he says due to me driving it on dirt roads/rocks anything less expensive that's not built for it will break down. Now i know this is complete bs but i also don't know anything about cars so i can't refute it w facts, but logically it's not sound.
Cliffs;
-OP in college, needs a new car that is able to occasionally go off road without breaking
- dad picks out 19000$ subaru and says theres nothing cheaper that wouldn't break
-Wants OP to pay 3000$ plus another 170$ a month over 3 years to pay off a loan on it
- refuses to compromise
-basically I need to know what cars are way cheaper than 19,000$ and are durable, can drive off road, and have 4 doors preferably

i think subarus are great starter cars if you absolutely need awd. for that price you should have a lot of options. the best value i think is a used crosstrek. they won't win any races and can't tow but they have decent clearance. my suggestion is look on carmax and sort by what you think you would like. it really depends on how much off road capability you really need.
second gen ford escapes are good for what they are too. Third gen are more highway oriented and car based but probably available for for that price range as well. you could look at jeeps as well or base pickups with just two doors or extended cabs but those have drawbacks too.☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ ★cVc★ ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

what? $170/month for 3 years is only $6120. Add in the $3k down and you're at $9120. So he's going to pay the other $10k for you? I don't see how you are getting shafted in this deal.
wait wut

This.
Your dad is pissed because he's trying to do you a favor and you're getting whiny about it. $170 a month is stupidly cheap. If you want to drive an old ****box you can certainly find something reliable for far less but you're getting cut a pretty sweet deal here.
And if money is a concern you shouldn't be seriously considering anything for offroad use unless you're good with a wrench and don't mind fixing stuff from time to time.

Did anyone consider a $19K subi could mean WRX too?? Dad offering half of a free car and being your emergency backstop because he won't want to screw up his own credit, and you have no credit I'm guessing... so did you answer Jax question about math classes yet??? I mean you could get a $3K POS Honda or something that would get you through school if dad's being unreasonable really. FWIW

that's it
OP just don't get into this agreement with your dad. he means well and is probably trying to do you a very big favor here but do HIM a favor and get out of this. you're in your 20s now.
even if you have to buy a beater for 6k at least it's in your name and you have no ties to your father financially.

Lets also not overlook the fact that his dad blew up on him like a ******* for wanting to spend less money.

you have 2 options: do whatever it is your dad wants. Or shell out money to buy your own car, on your own terms. You can't force him to give you money on your terms.

One thing you might not be considering OP, is that your pop is trying to get you to develop some credit in your name. To have a car payment in your name is a good first step in developing good credit for the future (which you will 100% need, as much as you may think otherwise)
And OP $170 a month is quite literally nothing. Most people spend that on a Friday night drinking at the bars.
My advice is to jump all over that deal.Goodbye fried rice, hello fried chicken!

I had to buy my own cars, your generation is pathetic. Complaining your pops wants to foot half the bill for a decent car? Smh
You should jump on it for a reliable car through school...let me tell you 170/mo is better than getting stranded and constant repairs.
Uber won't let you drive an old ****box, you should check what qualifies. The only 5k I will ever complete: rep power on bb.com

Cannot believe what I'm reading. You are so ungrateful.
My brothers and I all bought our own first car. Saving since we were 15 with the idea of buying a car as soon as we got our license. My father and mother were not in a position to help.
You're dad went through all that and is now showing you how he doesn't have to help, and you should appreciate his help more.
You are 21..... Have you not worked yet? How are you volunteering ...don't you have bills that need to be paid.
Do you live at home still? Do you help with house payment/cable/power?
Honestly I am wondering how much you have learned in college.
