thank you for the great writeup and all usefull info presented here.
just started the program, have done the first workout yesterday (hi volume + hi intensity).
i started with BP instead of squat. i put for the BP 80% of my 5RM and did 5x5 and it was hard.
then i thought i go lighter on squat and put 72% and boy that appeared much harder than the 80% of the BP... i struggled on this and felt my legs shaking on the last reps of the last set.
so, i wonder what percentages did ppl use for the volume day compared to the 5RM. i had never done 5x5 across before. i did 3x5 when doing the SS only. The DOMS i got on my hamstrings are bad. chest got doms but much milder.
since i never done this program before, i'm thinking if i should start with lower weights on monday, or if i should just stick to this weight till i start getting used to hi volume stuff.
having done a couple months of madcow 5x5 i have a good idea on what weight to use for the maxout day. but with the 5x5 i'm lost. any ideas???

For the 5x5 workout, definitely drop some weight from your last recent 3x5 workout. It's fine to err on the conservative side, you can always make a larger jump later. If it was a serious struggle to complete the first workout, you should drop the weight down a bit and work back up. The difference between 3x5 and 5x5 is pretty large w/r/t recovery and energy required to complete the workout. You don't want to be struggling for the first few weeks at all.

cool thread! i'm currently doing the TX method with a pretty basic template, and i think it's kinda weird how much some of these routines deviate from the principle of volume-recovery-intensity.
well, here's my routine if anyone's interested
week A
m: squat 5x5, bench 5x5, chinup 5x5 (usually results in failure)
w: squat 3x3, dip 2x5, row 2x5
f: squat 1x1-5, press 1x1-5, deadlift 1x1-5
week B
m: squat 5x5, press 5x5, row 5x5
w: squat 3x3, dip 2x5, chinup 3x5
f: squat 1x1-5, bench 1x1-5, deadlift 1x1-5
very enjoyable for me\.

out of curiosity, what are the thoughts on this general template Rip threw out, which has you doing the 1x5 Deadlifts on Monday and an Oly lift variant on Fridays?
Also, if this is a new variant, where would one sub in Pendalay Rows?"Cry Havoc and Let Slip the Dogs of War"

I'm still a beginner and am on SS. I've only been doing it for 4 months and know i still have quite a bit of time on it, but i'm thinking ahead. I've read up stuff like Madcow's, Wendler's 531, Bill Starr and TM of course. I'm split between 531 and TM, obviously i still have a lot of time until i decide finally, but im just trying to get to grips with the programming. From what i can see, if i did TM, it would look like this:
Monday
Squat 5X5
Bench Press 5X5
Power Clean 5X3
Dips 3x???
Wednesday
Front Squat 3X3
Overhead Press 3x3
Pendlay Rows 3x3
Pull ups 3x??
Friday
Squat 5RM/3RM/2RM/1RM
Bench Press 5RM/3RM/2RM/1RM
Deadlift 5RM/3RM/2RM/1RM
Monday
Squat 5X5
Overhead Press 5X5
Power Clean 5X3
Pull ups 3x???
Wednesday
Front Squat 3X3
Bench Press 3x3
Pendlay Rows 3x3
Dips 3x???
Friday
Squat 5RM/3RM/2RM/1RM
Overhead Press 5RM/3RM/2RM/1RM
Deadlift 5RM/3RM/2RM/1RM
when i say 5RM/3RM/2RM/1RM i mean that i will start i will start with just 5RM first, then when i stall, i will move to 3RM, etc. all the way to 1RM at which point i will do some sort of alternating between RM (maybe 5RM/3RM or 3RM/1RM)
Also i threw some Rows in as i wouldnt be getting proper upper back/rear delts work otherwise

thread resurrection...might have been answered, but don't have time to read the whole thread
Is weight added to the OHP and bench every week? For instance, if you were benching on monday and friday and pressing on wednesday. The following Monday, would you add weight to the OHP, even though you only trained it on recovery day the previous week and therefore didn't train a new max on friday?***Dirty South Crew***
