PEScience – Select Protein - Frosted Chocolate Cupcake, Milk Chocolate and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup

This is part 2 of the review series I am doing after receiving an amazing care package from Sponsored Athlete and Marketing Director for the European branch of PEScience, Ben Carpenter. As I stated in my previous review, Ben and PEScience didn’t ask me to do these reviews and my opinion on the products they sent me, are just that, my opinion. Thus, because I wanted to thank them for being epic and sending me a few sample tubs, along with I wanted you the reader to get some insight on how PEScience - Select Protein tastes prior to hitting the ‘buy’ button, I felt like a few reviews would be the best way to do this.

For people who like the TLDR version, skip to the bottom to get the final verdict.





Introduction (Yes This is The Same One Used in My Previous Post)

I have been buying supplements and some form of protein powder for the past 8 years. I have tried everything under the sun, from BSN to ON to MusclePharm to MuscleTech to Cellucor to Animal Whey…the list goes on and if you name a flavor from the line, I have probably tried it.

This is where PEScience Select Protein comes into play. A supplement company that I have been well aware of for a few years, but for some reason, never bought it. Spoiler: now having tried 4 (edit 5) flavors…I almost wanted to cry in a corner and remorse about how much I have been missing over the years.

However, this helps me paint a picture on why I believe PEScience just snuck into my #1 protein supplement in all 4 of the flavors I was so thankfully to try. Also having tried various other brand, I can compare it to them and really give a good rating based on my previous experiences.

This will help you as the reader get a perspective on what you may be missing out on as you take another sip of that protein shake from a different brand.

Now for the second review I will be combing three of flavors into one massive review… Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, Milk Chocolate and their brand new flavor, Frosted Chocolate Cupcake.

You might be wondering, why are you combining 3 flavors into one review? Simply put, it’s based on the fact that the base chocolate flavor of all of these, are quite similar and two of the flavors, Milk Chocolate and Frosted Chocolate Cupcake, taste almost identical (in my opinion). I’ll explain a few differences here shortly, but don’t get me wrong…although the flavors taste quite similar the flavor profile is still spot on. See the picture below of one of the three shakes I made. They all looked identical to this one (hinting at the chocolate base being similar).



So…when we think of chocolate, specifically milk chocolate, what comes to mind? For me personally, my brain goes directly to Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar or a Wendy’s Frosty…if you thought the latter, and have had a Wendy’s Frosty, basically you know the flavor profile of all 3 of these protein powders from the chocolate stand point.

Now what is different between the three?

Picture a Wendy’s Frosty and JIF Peanut Butter having a love child…and that’s your Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup. Another way to look at it is, if you were to take a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, melt it down, and it became some liquid thing to drink. Sounds good right? One thing that I have found however, is the strength of the peanut butter when companies combine the two. The combo works, I won’t fib there. But, when it comes to protein powders and adding in liquid, the peanut butter flavor becomes suppressed by the chocolatey notes. With that being said though, PEScience – Select Protein – Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup is probably the best Chocolate + Peanut Butter flavor I have had on the market to date. Personally though, I would love a straight Peanut Butter flavor. That way there is nothing to hide the awesome smooth and creamy texture of a Peanut Butter protein shake.




TIP: A way I have been able to get around the above issues, is mixing the protein powder in almond or cashew milk (“water”). Gives it an extra nutty note.

Milk Chocolate and Frosted Chocolate Cupcake are a lot alike…they are almost like two monozygotic (identical) twins, where 90-95% (don’t quote me on this) of their attributes are the same, and only ~5-10% of them are different. As you can tell from the pictures below, unless you really look, the protein powders look (and smell) quite similar. The Frosted Chocolate Cupcake is the lighter powder (one of the right), which, makes complete sense because you get a burst of freshness going on from the hidden vanilla. I’m guessing the vanilla is from the ‘Frosting’ that accompanies Chocolate Cupcakes.



With that being said, the flavors are very much alike and unless you really pay attention, it’s sometimes hard to determine which one you are consuming. I’m not going to dock points off here, due to they are both amazing flavors, I just want let the readers know that if you buy one, you may not need to buy the other unless you run out. So…if you like vanilla with your chocolate, get Frosted Chocolate Cupcake, if not…get Milk Chocolate.

Now where do the above proteins rank? Because I have already rambled enough, let’s get to some #’s so you can gauge what one to buy. Since all of these flavors are spot on in flavor, I'm going to highlight the negatives and show you where and why I docked each one.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup || Rank: 9.0 / 10
Like I stated above, it's good, but the peanut butter flavor gets masked a bit from the chocolate.

Milk Chocolate || Rank: 9.0 / 10
I love chocolate, especially Milk, but it loses a hair bit from being extremely sweet. Although this doesn't put me off, I let a friend sample it to confirm my biased and they agreed, it is a very sweet protein powder.

Frosted Chocolate Cupcake || Rank: 9.5 / 10
Same rank as above, but with the added vanilla, I had to give it a bit higher ranking. Maybe to really seperate this flavor from the above...PEScience could add in some actual chocolate cake pieces (like they do with cookie pieces in Cookies N' Cream).

Overall...amazing protein powders and I highly recommend anyone looking to get a high quality and very flavorful protein powder, to go with PEScience.

Comparison to Frosty really makes me want to figure out how to make a Select Frosty. Maybe a combination of Gourmet Vanilla and Frosted Chocolate Cupcake stirred into yogurt and semi-frozen? Hmm. Frostys have such a weird half ice cream half milkshake texture that I'm not sure how to replicate that haha.

Best frosty combo for me has been the following: 1 serving of Oikos Greek Chocolate Frozen Yogurt, 1 or Half a Frozen (FROZEN IS KEY) Banana, Few Ice Cubes, 1 or 2 TBSP of Peanut Butter (or sub with PB2), 1 Scoop of PEScience Whey then add in liquid of your choice till you can eat with spoon (I use Almond Milk). Blend in a Magic Bullet and Enjoy.

Literally like a mock Frosty but healthier.
