I got a bridal shower invitation in the mail today and have no idea who these people even are? How would you handle the RSVP when you're dealing with complete strangers you don't know? Do you just politely tell them they made a mistake?

Maybe ask your family/friends. It's possible that they know this person and you somehow ended up on one of their social lists.
If you know people in common, they may have invited everyone whose name they could get hoping for presents. If no one you know knows them, I'd just let them know that you think they made a mistake and you don't know them. You can't help the hopeless.

Just ignore it. If you don't know them well enough to recognise their names, then they don't know you well enough to be offended by no RSVP. If it turns out to be somebody that cares, they will call you to chase it, at which point you can just lie and say that you already sent it back.

Agreed w/ this. ^^
If someone's sending me an invite, I expect to at least recognize your name (even if we're not close). Otherwise, I'm going to presume you've made an error and/or yo'ure just trying to increase your gift numbers.

This^^^, ignore it.
Had a guy I work with at times, he's an engineer at our company HQ and have dealt with him off and on for the past 3-4 yrs. He sent me an invite to his daughters wedding, wtf I don't know her and have never met her. She is not hurting either so i'm not sure what the thinking was with sending to anyone and everyone?"You know that little thing in your head that keeps you from saying things you shouldn't? Yeah, well, I don't have one of those."

Thanks guys/girls.
I did check with my entire family and no one knows who these people are. I also found it weird that you would invite someone to your bridal shower but not invite them to the wedding. That makes absolutely no sense to me and it seems like your only concern is an actual gift count.
I've always felt the proper thing to do was RSVP. It's nice to have a basic head count for the food, table settings, etc...but in this case I'm thinking just ignore and forget about it.National Level Competitor (Female BB)
