It confuses me when I hear people in the media, politicians, or other people ignorant of guns say "no one needs an AR-15 because they are not useful for home defense". Um, actually the AR platform is the PERFECT home defense firearm.
I'll break this one down a bit.
First, it has a 10.5" barrel so it is a SBR (Short Barreled Rifle) according to the ATF which required me to submit a lengthy application process, background check (in addition to the one I went through when I bought it as a pistol), a 3 month wait, and a $200 tax stamp just to be able to add a stock to it.
The short barrel is practical for HD as it gives me a smaller overall length to wield inside a home.
It also has a suppressor. Which took another background check, another 6 month wait, and another $200 tax stamp. All so that if I have to fire the rifle in defense in the home it won't blow my hearing out and/or that of my family.
A 500 Lumen weapon mounted light with strobe function allows me to illuminate, positively identify, and disorient a threat without having to move my hands from a firing position.
People often use handguns for home defense, but a handgun is used to fight your way to a long gun. Handguns are by nature not accurate weapons with their short barrels and short sight radius. Especially under stress, when your adrenaline dump hits and you lose fine motor control. Long barrel and holographic sight ensure round go where they intend.
Bringing a long gun to a gun fight is like bringing a chainsaw to a knife fight.
The AR platform is also light and has zero if any felt recoil so it is easily managed by not just me but also my wife, and allows for rapid well aimed follow on shots.
Rifles produce hydrostatic shock, handguns for the most part do not.
Handguns have half the magazine capacity of an AR.
So, all rambling aside. This is the perfect HD weapon. Gun grabbers can kiss my ass.

I restore axes as a hobby, have around 300 of them, maybe 50 currently restored and sharpened, literally every room of the house has about a dozen.
If you think a home invader won't 360 his ass outta there upon entry, you got another thing coming boyo.

A handgun is still the best home defense weapon IMO. Rifles have their place in there, and are no doubt handy to have, but my pistol in my nightstand is better than my AR behind my nightstand. Also not to mention issues with over penetration and CQB maneuverability.

Criminals aren't smart people, good chance they lack the skill to invade a home properly with a firearm and have the balls to actually use it.
The best offense is a good defense, solid door, deadbolt, lights, a security system, living in a good part of town or the country, owning multiple large dog breeds, constantly working outside sharpening and hanging axes for everyone to see, not being a manlet. . .
I have several guns, just don't have one locked and loaded in the house.
Also my house doesn't have 50 foot long rooms, not that great of distance anywhere in the house.Rugby Crew

Pshht.. I rather keep a p90. Way more light, can be shot with one hand, compact, Can be put in a dresser drawer for god sakes.
or a simple glock.
I'd take the ar15 for shooting.. not for home defense."The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be."

Why not own both?
Why? You'd rather give a home invader a better chance of success?
Depends on the kind of ammo you're using. 62 grain m855 will absolutely penetrate deeper than 115 grain FMJ 9mm. I've seen 240 grain .45 acp rounds get stuck in standard structural 2x4s too.
But sheet rock will not stand up well to anything. Even .22 lr could go clean through.Last edited by 4ea; 07-01-2016 at 01:50 PM.

It's the propaganda by the anti gunners that tries to make people think there's no legitimate use for an AR for the average person. If everyone realized they could be the best home defense weapon, they'd never get anywhere with their talks of bans. They've obviously never tried to make follow up shots with a pistol vs. an AR. An AR with a red dot is so much easier under stress to acquire your target than a handgun.

That's pretty boss. My friend is trying to convince me to get a handgun but I do like a rifle, especially the AR. I've shot one a few times.

Have you tried shooting these different types of firearms?
Both have their place, and both would serve well as HD weapons, but you'd be better equipped with a rifle. Much better range, much easier to hit what you're aiming at, typically higher magazine capacity and much more powerful rounds.
Plus rifles are more intimidating, so it's more likely a home invader would run away, which is much more preferable to shooting them.Merica
