Thats pretty terrible. I think its pretty socially acceptable for people to pay for their own tux rentals. I have been in 4 weddings and I paid to rent my own tux each time.
You sure it wasn't a rental and you forgot to return it so they charged him the full price? Or maybe you were supposed to give back to him to return it?
I remember my rental place the last time I rented a tux telling me that if I didn't return it I was going to be charged about 500.00 or something like that.

To offer a different perspective, OP, you just threw away a 15 year friendship over $500. Is $500 a lot of money? Yeah, but lets be realhere, you'll probably piss that amount away at your local bar within the next couple of months. You sound pretty close to him as well, you've mentioned talking to him multiple times a week prior to this incident and even helping his dad get a job. You just severed multiple ties, including at least another groomsmen. I think you may look back on this and regret it. As you get older, friends get harder to come by and 15 years is a significant amount of time. In the grand scheme of things, $500 is nothing.

Sloots come and go but moms are forever
Get to know your parents: you never know when they'll be gone for good.
Be nice to your siblings: they're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Enjoy your body: use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it: it's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

I shall celebrate the day where it becomes a cultural norm to just say "Hey guys I'm getting married at x place at x time on x day, feel free to turn up".
The people who really value you will attend, and people who don't value you so much won't but there won't be any hard feelings about it - you just know who you can consider close to you.
In the current format you have all these phucking formalities which end up breeding resentment and force people to put on faces for a day when they don't even want to be there. In what right mind do people want to force attendance on someone...oh wait people are up their own arses.Into- Mountaineering, running & Djent/Progressive music.
Anti- Lack of accountability. Censorship, fat acceptance, & current wave feminism. That's why I left the UK.

Whateva op, i have been to a family wedding which was arranged at two weeks notice and everyone who was attending was expected to pay for it, the bridesmaids had to buy their own dresses, the father was asked to stump the bill for a fancy hotel for 100 guests and he is a peasant and had to put it on a credit card.

It is relevant because some people in this world get what they want and some people... like op... foot the bill.
With my scenario above the couple told the families they needed to be married asap so they could emigrate to get some great job so everyone chipped in to help them out. They never did emigrate...
all dat emigration wedding money bought a nice Audi tho.Last edited by doughnutking; 01-03-2017 at 11:46 PM.

Lawyer ends friendship of 15 years over a messily $500? He clearly wasn't a very good friend.

I had another friend I talked to after this all went down and he had a good point that for people if they want a reason to end a friendship they can find one. That was clearly the case here, wanted to 'last word' so to say, esp after I called him out over the email.
