Looking at Europe today makes me wonder if there couldn't have been a better outcome. People want to leave it alone at "USA saved Europe" when it's obvious that the aftermath and current situation shows a much more complicated result. What good came from Russia stopping the German advance in the east? Did Russia turn out to be a shining beacon of civilization? No hate just real tea.

How come the US and Russia became such enemies following WWII? It seems like they could have had the potential to become good allies following the war since they defeated Germany together.

Couple of issues here.

Fact 1 is pretty solid but the reason they had few capable generals is Stalin's love of executing all of his high ranking military personnel every few years incase they got any ideas. Weirdly enough, a similar thing cost Hitler the war. If he'd put Rommel in charge of the Eastern Front instead of making him top himself it may have turned out differently for him.

Fact 3: Don't act like you did us a favour. If the USSR had that much power and the US wasn't able to set up like it did after WW2 you lot would be just as fuked as we were. Like us, you entered the war primarily for your own self interest. You saw the bigger picture.

Fact 4 is bullchit. Germany couldn't have launched an invasion of mainland Britain without both air and naval superiority.

Fact 5: Agree with you here. Another point is we did a lot more damage to Germany with traditional bombs. The civilian casualties over there were immense (and over here as well, they started it).

The shock factor of Hiroshima and Nagasaki probably saved more lives than it ended.

They never got anywhere near us in terms of naval superiority and if it was looking dangerous we would've recalled every ship we had to defend ourselves. The scale of our navy was fuking terrifying and the Germans couldn't even match a small part of it.

In terms of air superiority, we made sure they didn't have that during the Battle of Britain (Their prerequisite to invasion, it happened before the US entered the war too)

So at best for the Germans it would just be a stalemate.

Fact 6: You're not an empire, we're still the world champs on the global conquest front. Your empire has only ever consisted of the philippines and Liberia until you gave the latter up. You have a few bases dotted around but you can be asked to leave easily enough.

I wouldn't be too confident military wise either. The Wehrmacht were probably the best in the world during WW2 in terms of equipment and training. They essentially took on the rest of the world's western powers and Russia alone and almost won Italy don't count, they're fuking useless). Pound for pound, they were probably far ahead of what the US are today despite maybe lacking in potential numbers.

If you act cocky, it's more of a shock when you get bitch slapped. Defeats are harder to take and you tend to shatter like glass.

I'll agree on your point about fighting insurgency though. We had a few pops at Afghanistan ourselves in our heydey. Weirdly enough to stop the Russians taking it and using it as a platform to invade India. Wrapped the initial war up quickly enough, barely lost a man. Then spent a few months getting ambushed every five seconds by various tribes.

Was before all that poncey rules of engagement bull too and we still couldn't put them down.

Another set of insurgents that gave us a bit of chew was the US during their revolution. Again, pissed the conventional warfare side of things for the most part but the arseholes kept hiding in the bushes and hitting our supply lines.

The best possible outcome for Nazi Germany without American intervention would have been a stalemate in which they successfully held central Europe. The American intervention and D-Day are rightly depicted as the destruction of the Reich and the liberation of the Continent, rather than anybody saving England.

What is rarely discussed, though, is that Hitler intended to exterminate most of the British population if Sea Lion was successful, starting with the systematic assassination of thousands of members of the leadership class by secret police based in London, Manchester, and Edinburgh and the enslavement of working-age males in labor camps on the Continent. It would then be resettled by Germans, like Poland. The scale of Nazi motherfuarkery is impossible for modern people accustomed to relative peace to appreciate.

Hess was the Deputy Fuhrer of Germany, third most powerful man in the Reich. The Germans were forced to say those things when Hess took off on his mission. And it was far from the only time Germany tried to negotiate peace with the UK.

Just like any good RTS like Starcraft or something, the main thing that wins the war is resources.

America had the most minerals and gas.

Germany had strong units (Hybrids?) but not as much minerals and gas. So they couldn't make as many units.

Russians were like the Zerg swarm, they had lots of land units but weak ones and not much tech in their tech tree.

British were like Protoss they had high tech and the best air units but not high in numbers.

Americas were the Terrans of course and they had access to the best gas and minerals, like the gold ones and we had good defense because of our positioning in NA and we had those anti-air turrets in Pearl Harbor but they weren't enough to stop the air raid.

But the important thing is resources and we had the most and produced them the fastest so therefore we were the best and won.
